Excluding the referral program. Which is fine and all, although I doubt many are using it because, well, it not explained very well in laymans terms sometimes.

Anyone trying to get byond's pagerank and stuff like that up? Little SEO, backlinks on other gaming sites or something? Anyone responsible for that? Little keyword research?

I'm seeing the keyword "free online games" doesnt have byond in the first 3 pages of its listing, even though in my opinion the platform is far superior and more fun than the flash websites listed there. Sure, its pretty competitive, but byond has an innate advantage over them in my opinion, because uh, its just better haha.

I hear a lot about how byond isn't making "much" money, ya know, so I was thinking that would make whoever's in charge of all this stuff a lot more money. Byond's public availability isn't really that high, its like on a "if you dont already know somebody whos in it, you wont find it" type of thing

I'd try "free multiplayer games", since not all online games are multiplayer. Its on the 3rd page with that search. :P
I think that there have been some small things in the world advertising Byond...

Scrubs had a Byond mug in one of their episodes IIRC.
People have been trying to get it used in schools.
Word of mouth.

That is all I can remember off the top of my head.

We've done a little SEO work to drive up the traffic, but to be honest, it hasn't had much effect. We've also submitted to a lot of directories, with about the same success. The best way to drive up pagerank is to have popular pages linking into us, which is why I was hoping the referral stuff would take off.

We'll be trying a few new things in the next month to see if we can get more traffic. Of course we'd appreciate any help from the community!

[EDIT] Most people just tells friends thats how i heard of it.
Plus if someone misspelt BEYOND take out the E they might be supprised by what they find :P.

I'd say the best thing to drive traffic to BYOND would be some really cool games. When someone finds a cool game that they want to play, they tell others about it, and it ends up getting linked to. Plus, when people see that BYOND can make cool games, they become more interested in BYOND as a development engine.

But, as has been mentioned before numerous times, there are very few games which even begin to take advantage of BYOND's current features. Most people seem to be content with a generic interface, and while the games in themselves may be fun, they don't show off enough to attract non-BYOND players.

Another thing that might help would be giving BYOND games some incentive to advertise outside of BYOND, but I don't know how you'd go about that.

Yeah, I know that's not what you meant. But that's at least the same mug, probably.

I'm no expert but would it help get a better placement for "free multiplayer games" if you made the frontpage URL byond.com/free-multiplayer-games? And then make byond.com redirect to byond.com/free-multiplayer-games? I don't know... I'm telling people on forums and stuff, might be having a little effect

3rd page huh? semi-nice. But looking at a lot of the first page result, I think the quality of byond is better than that

BYOND should certainly be at the first page result.

Yeah, it should. But the sorting is based on popularity, not quality, so...

I'm sure you've already thought of this, but in case you haven't you could:
1)Advertise on Myspace(a crap load of people get on there, and they have adds for everything >_>, although its probably pricey)

2)Instead of just advertising, since a new App craze has hit Myspace, you could make an App that developers could use on myspace to show off their game(s)(kinda like the x-box live gamercard app), and have a link to the BYOND site to "Check out this game and more"

Eh, sorry for the waste of space if this has already been considered.
I've tried, it is not an easy thing to advertise BYOND.

I've tried getting it listed on some large game development websites. This could possibly happen sometime in the future.
I suggest it when anyone asks about making multiplayer/online games, though usually other people suggest other programs which the people invariably end up using.
I have also simply tried advertising it. Sure I can say it is free to use and can make online games, but if and when people start asking more questions about it then things turn bad.
I cannot show off good games made on BYOND because honestly the quality of even the best BYOND games is well... Low, especially compared to other programs of a similar nature.
When people ask about BYONDs capabilities and so on the only thing I can say in a positive light is that it is easy to make online games with it. Other than that there really isn't anything it has that other programs cannot do in a better way.
I cannot talk about BYONDs community either, because it sucks and is very unfriendly.

So basically, unless I obsure the facts about BYOND and keep things short and simple advertising it is damn hard. But most people don't seem interested in those sort of advertisements.

Honestly, of all the advertising for BYOND that I have tried I doubt any of it brought in new members.
I usually get about at far as explaining what BYOND stands for after they tell me Beyond is spelled wrong. Then I cry myself to sleep after they make fun of me for building my own net dream. =(
