And I need to finish thereee...
But I don't know whereeee..
Because I'm kind of scared to choose the wrong parts for graphics and such. $2000 Budget for a 5 year+ investment.

lol you're spending 500 for just the mobo i spent 500 for my entire rig. what are you trying to do anyway with all that
|
Hosting whole lot of servers. A donation to BYOND (and a bit for other servers as well).
|
Pretty much, I need to finalize the price of this desktop so I can allocate money to this cause and use the rest on other matters. So I needed help choosing the right parts.
In terms of bandwidth, I just calculated it and at midday when most people are online during the weekend I use up 29/10000 of my upload speeds. And obviously, my download speeds are 2x+ higher than my upload speeds. So that fraction would be even smaller. This is among 12 games. |
Well, while the clock speed there is very nice and all and 8 cores is all good, if you want high density you need to be looking at socket G34 / F / multi-socket boards. But as kind of expected, Tigerdirect doesn't do them for reasonable prices, at all.
Basically as DreamDaemon is mostly single-threaded, your customers see much better service out of having their own core. 3.0 GHz, 5.0 GHz, not such a big difference (in that if a BYOND game is chewing up a 3.0 GHz core non-stop, it probably has a programming issue), but the mostly uninterrupted CPU-time of having their own core is pretty nice for performance. So you're basically looking for core-density out of the CPU/board. Given that, you might want to actually build 2 boxes. For about the same price as that start-kit, you could get 2x8 core 3.5 GHz AMD FX CPUs, and two appropriate motherboards. 16 cores, 16 non-contended DreamDaemon instances, or 32 contended ones if you work on the assumption that your customers code isn't entirely terrible. After that, you need to think on what your customer's usual big latency issues are. Usually, it's that lovely lag-spike from doing entire world-saves. So you go look at SSDs, or RAID, or whatever else you fancy to improve disk performance for that. At it's base though .... Goonstation's first SS13 server used to run on some hilarious 700 MHz FreeBSD box and sported 50+ players without being entirely crippling. So ... BYOND world requirements aren't that bad, really. |
That sounds great, even though I got 75% through with this without checking BYOND. That would be a great idea. But what about the cost in electricity from running two of those monsters? It's not entirely my house, yet. And I don't have a job, yet (Give me about 2 months). So I'm trying to be considerate and mostly focus on saving energy as well. What's your approach on this?
I also try to talk with the players on their programming to help them solve some problems with how much CPU their games use. Such as loops. I also have a CPU limit program that will automatically limit each process to a certain cap. So, even if they do obliterate my processor they won't be harming other people. Currently the limit for free games is 15%. Free games being games approved by BYOND to be posted and viewed in the search section, pretty much. After the upgrade it'll drop by about 5% or more. So that's more games that can be securely hosted. On another note, here's my progress! I hope you can see it. I tried to get it all in one shot. |
If you can't see it, I'm sure right clicking it and opening it in a new tab while also zooming in a bit (CTRL+Scrolling) should help out.

if you got a 2k budget get a Intel Xeon Hexa or Octa core Server
you can get them from >>> http://www.supermicro.com/index.cfm << were i get mine or other places. their quite nice for what they come with such as you can put multiple processor in them. i got one that takes 4 only cost me $3500.00 came with 16gb Ram it was a 4.4Ghz Hexa Core came with 4 scsi drives(75GB per drive) very nice. |
For building a server box soon, I will be using it for hosting various game servers for myself and friends to play on.
Parts: CPU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... Motherboard - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... Memory - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... Case/PSU - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... My internet connection is 20mb/s, I'm not quite sure if that's enough however. I will be hosting and playing on them with about 5-10 friends in games like Terraria, Natural Selection 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Garry's Mod, and some others(not all at the same time obviously). |
It's a nice bandwidth speed if you're just playing with your friends and not 50 different people. You'll need more bandwidth if you want to be sure you can handle 50 people, if that's what you're doing along with your friends.
As for your parts, none of the links work. And they all link to the same place. |

I got some money recently and decided to waste it on a new build, since NewEgg was having all those Columbus day sales. [EDIT]Oops. I didn't even notice I purchased that cpu cooler. LOL. Whelp.. Uh.. Um.. Yeah? Hope it fits, I guess. |
I got that CPU fan with liquid cooling. How many other fans do you think I should get for that specific motherboard with the 32GB RAM?

Personally? http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/ item-details.asp?EdpNo=7017867&csid=_61 Pretty sure you can get on in black, as well.
Most full-tower cases come with a number of pretty good fans already installed, any additional/replacement fans I would recommend Noctua brands. They may not look the best, but they seem to work the best. I actually didn't mean to get the cooler master cpu cooler, I was gonna go with a Noctua; but the motherboard I purchase isn't listed on their compatibility charts. Must've accidentally added that to the cart at some point, but Noctua support replied within 20 minutes of my support message and informed me it is indeed compatible with my motherboard, as long as the EVO model is. Then- if you feel you need it; http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/ item-details.asp?EdpNo=7811033&CatId=495 - there are other, better HDD coolers out there, but that's about 1/5th the cost. |
Wouldn't it be nice to just buy a cheap liquid cooling system for everything? They cost as much as that fan. Lol. I hear it runs nice. Don't know if it'd be nice for other things besides the CPU though.

Black Friday is coming up. why does the day where everything is cheap have to be called "black friday"? what is this trying to imply about black folks? that we so broke we can only afford to purchase stuff when it's discounted? why couldn't it be called "white friday"? |

Don't see how why the colour is so off putting to you American folk .. it's just a colour .. The majority of African Americans or just Africas have a brown complexion.. and are hardly stark dead black.
I guess the whole slavery thing changes that, but I am not American so I don't care .. I just treat everyone equal. |

Don't see why anyone is '[Origin] American' when they're not from that place and you'll rarely find someone who's been to the place to which we assume their origin. Not all black people are from Africa, I think it's more offensive to say African American, when it should just be American.

Touche, I was trying to use American terminology, I've seen to many movies I guess.
