Well guys, the 2000-2010 decade is almost up, and BYOND has made some changes, and has greatly improved their system. Our community has staggered a lot, BUT overall it was a decade none the less.

I'd like to see BYOND do a little bit of Archiving so we can actually get the highlights throughout the years of what went on. I would also like to see BYOND make an "All Decade" team of the best BYOND games. I truly think BYOND peaked in 01-03.

Anyway, here are my nominations for BYOND Game of the Decade:

1) Hedgerow Hall -- for obvious reasons. Very innovative gameplay, enforced Role Playing, great game with sub-par graphics! The gameplay/community is what made the game!

2) My Life as a Spy -- had a great community, great gameplay and great concept. The fact that it was only hosted on the weekends made everybody look forward to the game!

3) Lode Wars -- Great Gameplay, LOVED the graphics as well. Very fun when a lot of people were playing together.

Honorable Mention: SPACETUG! Come on, when you had this game full of people even with the bugs, this game was fun and hilarious!

Post up your noms! keep it 3 or less and WHY!
My nominations would be...

Last Robot Standing (DDT) - Very very fun. Still has games go on all day, every day, despite no longer being worked on or having support provided for it and despite being debilitated by a BYOND update for many months.

Plunder Gnome (IainPeregrine) - Very fun, very high replay value. Not hard to set up a server and find a few games.

Duel Monsters Online (Kajika) - Well-made game that has upwards of 40 players almost 24/7, and has done so for as long as I can remember. Vied with Last Robot Standing for #1 when rankings were hot.
Dragonball Zeta -- Not only is it the most well known game on BYOND, it spawned thousands of sequels.

Haha, you know what? I would actually have to agree with this.
Without a doubt, Gakumerasara.FinalFantasyOnline. I can't think of any other game that can compete in terms of polish, addictiveness, capacity for single player, multiplayer, and large scale multiplayer gameplay, quantity and quality of content, and accessibility. It also helps that it has been up and running (and continuously updated) for most of the decade in question (from 2003 onward).

So would I, I think. To be honest, it has probably introduced more users to BYOND than any other single game; and not all of them ended up just making rips!

To be sure, I found BYOND from an off-site link to version 13 of Zeta. That was when I had bi-weekly to weekly access to the Internet, and sought to participate in an online DBZ RPG, but most of what I found were forum/e-mail based (and not well suited to my limited online time).

Incidentally, I also learned DM under those circumstances; I distinctly recall putting the BYOND software and a couple of demos (hub://Dantom.YourFirstWorld and hub://Deadron.StepBYOND) as well as Sidewalk Santas (I forget who made that) and a meter snippet by Spuzzum (I think) all onto floppy disks to take to my own home where I had offline access to a computer. I also had an offline copy of the DM Guide to match. ^^

Too bad the community kills any fun the game could be.
I hate to the nominating these... but...

1) Space Station 13 - Okay, I have to admit that I stopped playing the game about five years ago, but the game is still going and with an active community. Exadv1 and the guys maintaining SS13 are obviously doing something right.

2) Proelium - There doesn't need to be an explanation for this.

3) Archipelago - This game, despite the bugs and bad interface, was extremely addictive and, for a short period of time, somewhat popular with some of the more experienced members/developers here. After Halcyon222 left BYOND, this game spawned a number of "remakes", if you will, to try to reattain this game's former glory.

I owe you Kuraudo! I was pretty certain/afraid that my post would gain me some flames/trolling. I found BYOND via Zeta, and it was through Zeta I introduced three of my friends to BYOND. Someone paying me to make an awful Zeta-rip was my first introduction to programming in DM, and from my other programming experience I managed to realise that working from a rip was an awful way to learn. But it was a great introduction.

Gughunter made Sidewalk Santas

I also joined BYOND due to Dragonball Zeta through one of the mod forums (Earth's Special Forces or another DBZ mod). However, I have heard of BYOND/DUNG through Ambrosine list of Game Creation resources. Just didn't join till November 26/27, 2003 to play Dragonball Zeta.

Originally, I had no real interest in DM though I would try it out a bit. That was changed in a few weeks, though I didn't quite get into DM (only the bare basics at the start) until I made a port of Text City Simulator Version 1 (originally designed in BASIC, using QBASIC) where it allowed me to get really get into things. Of course Version 1 of the BYOND port had some things non-existent in the BASIC version like lack of multiplayer.

I have worked on some other people's projects in the past, but some were indeed derived or ripped from sources (mainly Zeta 2 and some other Dragonball Zeta related). Zeta 2 was a real mess when trying to fix certain things. I prefer developing code from scratch anyway. Infact, every project I've worked on was developed from scratch. Like I've stated, however, I have worked on other's before that you could say were ripped or derived from other source code.

Now, one game I would nominate (though an indie game now) is Crispy's Yet Another Generic Space-Age Conquest Game (when it still appeared in BYOND). That game was fun when I played it, though I haven't bought Mayhem Intergalactic yet.

I found BYOND previously, but because I found the game website instead of the developer website, I thought it was just a place to play games, not a software suit to make games (which was what I was after), so I skipped over it completely and instead went for RPG Maker 2000.

And I joined 'cause of DBO. One of the moderators to a DBZ mod for Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 posted about it on the forums. But I got there late, and managed to play the game twice before it disappeared forever. =(

If you haven't, you should check out Solar Conquest by Foomer. That's a very nice game in the same realm. I remember Stephen001, Myself, digitalmouse and a couple of others (possibly Snagler) spent a good five or so hours playing that game once.

I heard of Solar Conquest, but haven't played that game yet. I'll give it a try though. :D

Dragon Ball Z: The Destruction is Real. Yeah, I was a forum member there for ever. Since Shred18 was working on that mod solo (DBZ 3.0)

That's going back a few years. I waiting for 4.0 for like, 2 years, and only managed to get one game out of it. =(

[edit] Wow, looking back on those forums. I was an absolute moron. I'm glad I've since changed my alias. Having early teenage me associated with "in my twenties now" me, nope, never going to happen. The few posts I have around BYOND from when I was 14/15/16 are bad enough.

I feel that way about things I posted last week, let alone months or years ago. My posts from years ago were just retarded.

And on a side note: I joined because of the old DBZ game that came before zeta.. The previous set of icons that everyone and their brother ripped. I don't remember what it was called. Before the first zeta even came out.

Indeed. If you do happen to have JK installed still, you remember MSN Game Zone? Well, they have JK Hub now, which is a program just like it. Playing SBX 3.1 would be nice, as well as TDiR. I never actually played TDiR with someone yet. Just the leaked beta.
I think everyone one is missing a really big one. This game is what actually originally got me into BYOND back in middle school around 6th grade, Dragon Quest Online. I was looking for a online Dragon Quest game and came across the website. Back then, in school, I was actually able to install and play BYOND on our school's network.

Dragon Quest on BYOND was fantastic. It was almost identical to the system based on the NES game and had a fun and compelling story line to keep players interested. And I hate mentioning this, but if I recall correctly, it was by SilkWizard. And even though I dislike the guy, you have to give him credit, it was a good game.
