Well somehow I stumbled upon BYOND again today when browsing around and watching a youtube lets play video of DF, then saw a video about Spacestation 13. Anyways I remember back when I was about 16 starting out on BYOND and developing a paintball game back then, I had a few players but it had to many bugs to be of any popularity. I got bored of making it, and moved onto I believe Game Maker. Anyways my point, I was checking through the games list and why is there about 50 dragonball Z remakes lmao? What's funny is somehow all of these have 50+ players, and the better games seem to have disappeared since back when I played/made games. What has happened here in the last 8 years?

I also note that somehow my game disappeared, guessing they were wiped at some point :P.

*Edit* Hrm odd, for some reason shows me as having joined in '06. But I know for a fact I joined much earlier than that since I was around 16, and graduated from highschool in '05. Thus it would have been around '03 when I joined.

Dang and another edit lol, but just realized now you have to be a "BYOND Member" to do much of anything. Back then they hosted games for free, along with being able to page/etc. Oh well, times change and money counts so it's obviously understandable(plus it's only $18 it seems for a full year).

Welcome back.

Anime rips have been on BYOND for nearly a decade, this is nothing new.

Here is a list of changes: [link]

Nope. No hub wipes.

Perhaps you used a different key?

Ah nice post, catches me up quick lol. I may dive back into BYOND again, was working on a MMO using the Eclipse engine(VB). But that engine is harder to edit than BYOND would be for adding new features/etc since it's a basic engine(and the community is pretty small).

Maybe I did use another key back then, I probably just removed the game as it had issues and just don't remember doing that.

Main thing with the anime, back then I only noticed 2 or so games related to Dragonball. Just don't understand why people would want to play remakes considering they are all almost identical.. just don't understand kids I guess lol(will have to learn though, I have a 3 year old now).

Hrm, looking at the games search you cannot sort by recently added only popularity and current players? Seems kind of one-sided, how is a new game that is added going to even be known about if it's obviously at the bottom of these listings?

We happen to be working on an interface for that right now. It's very biased towards original games.

Ah nice, thanks for the reply Tom :).

You can:

http://www.byond.com/ members/?command=search&type=games&sort=date&unpub=1

&sort=date as an addition to the link will sort by date.

They don't. People want to OWN the game they play, so they rip it. Now they're big man, and they can harass all the new players with their GM verbs. There are a lot of people out there who don't care about developing games; all they want to do is own their own copy / server, and maybe tweak it here or there so their friends have custom icons.

We shouldn't blame the rippers for this - their desire to operate a server is just as valid as my desire to design a game. The problem is that BYOND doesn't have an official place for such people. Lacking an alternative that's acceptable to the dev. community, they blow off the developers and rip instead.

Where original creations can shine through, and the hub is worth browsing! Oh, wait, no.

Ah, well most people are not going to know how to do that(being the players). So hopefully Tom gets the new system out soon!

I probably would agree with Falacy as well though, with there being so many ripped games on the hub. Or just add some kind of review mechanism so that repeat games cannot be posted on the hub anymore(or just remove the source for said anime games lmao).

This is really off-topic, I know, but would you recommend using the Eclipse Engine at all?

Yea I mean it's decent, I am actually considering switching my game over to BYOND though since the community here seems bigger(larger playerbase is possible). Though they seem mainly in the anime games, so not sure yet. Though with reading through the responses from Tom on the last few threads it seems they are possibly fixing the issue with rips and anime(false ad thread below). So I am kind of stumped at the moment on what I want to do here lol.

The only thing I don't like about Eclipse is that it's visual basic, which is fairly limiting(java would be a ton better, which they have a java project for it but it's nowhere near done). I actually almost think DM is less limiting in some aspects, if not then they are pretty equal(though the characters do move much smoother on Eclipse). So really just personal preference, you can always try it out and come back here if it doesn't work out for you.
