So I have been away from Byond for a couple years and I show back up every once in a while and I just came back again. That being said I knew of a dbz game that was in development for long long time called dbz online II and I just learned they the game had to be disband because of Funimation filing some type of copyright suit on the game. Is this true or was there another reason?

Also are dbz game just not allowed on byond anymore? What are the rules?
Funimation filed a C&D on BYOND, which means BYOND cannot legally support any games relating to Funimation copyrighted games. This includes Dragonball and Bleach.

So it wasn't any specific games that got the C&D.

Well I know that dbz heroes united still runs so can you still make dbz games? If so what are the rules? So it doesn't violate.

You don't make a DBZ fan game, basically.

You can still make Dragonball games all you want, it just cannot be listed on BYOND at all.

Thank you for the clarification. Basically you have to advertise it some over way beside byond. I get it now.

Note that if your DBZ/Bleach game ever gets popular enough you'll likely receive a C&D letter from Funimation yourself.

You'll of have spent all that time working on your game, just to be forced to stop hosting/developing it.

Are you sure that you want to follow that road?

Bleach is owned by Viz Media, not Funimation.

Considering how far the stick up Funimations posterior is, I doubt it's much different for other companies.

I don't recall Bleach being mentioned by anyone, but I know One Piece definitely was. However we've always said the safest thing when creating a game is to avoid making a fangame and do something original.

To clarify, there actually were specific games that were listed in the takedown notice by FUNimation, one of which was a clear parody (we straightened that one out with them). Since then at least DBZ and One Piece games in particular have been rejected on sight. We also were contacted by Square Enix about Final Fantasy games, though I don't know if they had any specific requests or not. They probably did, since that's how DMCA takedown requests work.

For games that fall into the line of fire, we strongly recommend redesigning the games into something more generic that still captures the essence of the type of game. For instance, except for changing some character/race names and a few other things, there isn't a lot stopping a typical DBZ game from becoming a generic fighter RPG where characters shoot beams out their butts or whatever it is they do. A more faithful interpretation obviously has a lot more to strip out, but there's still a pretty clear path toward going legit.

One Piece is all about pirates (so I hear) and has proven even easier to transition into a non-infringing game. Likewise a Final Fantasy game probably isn't so far separated from a basic JRPG that it wouldn't be better off with the author just changing a few names.

Hey, even people with no life can be mentioned in humorous ways!

I thought bleach was owned by Funimation?
Regardless, thanks for clearing that up.

Tite Kubo/Shueisha, TV TOKYO, dentsu, Pierrot.
And VIZ Media owns the copyright to the official Bleach website.
