I have been on BYOND for about 10 years. I am 23 years old now. I decided around November-December of 2011 to learn programming and help improve the website. Since then I have paid over $150 to BYOND, created 1 game, 1 demo of a game and 2 programming demos that were listed. I helped a bit of some other projects too. I really like this place. But there are some bad apples here and there. The thing is I had an idea of creating a website offering BYOND services that some of the money will go to BYOND, it will help developers as well as clients. I created that website with a friend of mine yesterday and now its live at hirebyondexperts.com . I posted here about it and here and people started flaming me and my website. Also on my website there was a lot of trolling. They trolled the chat, the live chat and the forums. Their trolls were of disgusting sexual pics and things like FACKTHISSITEFACKTHISSITEFACKTHISSITEFACKTHISSITE flooding all over my screen. Even moderator LordAndrew said my website is a good idea and trolling it is bad and reflects badly on our community. See what I want is getting rid of trolls and also hurting them. I want BYOND to ban trolls not only from forums but from playing video games. That will cut the trolls' arms off and send a message to all of them that we are serious about having a good community. There are also other things we can think of hurting the trolls. That is what I propose.

I've just returned myself, 23 as well... been on BYOND just as long as you and the state that these forums are in right now is hilarious. I remember when these forums were a haven for design philosophy and programming help but now it seems like it is mostly just people trolling. The longest topics in the art forum seem to just be people joking around and being nonsensical, and some of the same people then complain about how no artists take BYOND seriously.

It doesn't mean they need to, let alone will be punished. The first rule of the Internets is to not feed the trolls, and you did so until they were plump and content.

It reflects badly on the community to troll plus we need to change things and improve the website and the community. Trolls deserve punishment.

I created that website with a friend of mine yesterday and now its live at hirebyondexperts.com . Before I get to addressing the issue at hand, I'd like to thank you for trying to help BYOND make additional funds. Although it's very similar to our Classified Ads section, the site itself has some improving to do; mainly not instantly messaging me as soon as the site loads up for the first time. A support operator shouldn't harass potential customers, especially when I'm just trying to navigate the site. The placeholder text was also something I didn't like, but I'm sure you'll get around to it in due time. I think the only other thing I disliked about your site is that you're advertising experts, but I've noticed some of the programmers who are being classified as experts still struggle with the basics. If you're trying to make your site professional, I'd take out the false advertisement. I highly doubt we'll just mass ban our trolls; especially if the reason is due to them trolling a different website. Most of our trolls aren't a problem since they rarely post, and those that do try to drag down our community are effectively dealt with. On the off chance that we're to ban all of our trolls, it'll make the moderators look more ban-happy than we are; probably making our image worse than it already is. Not sure why you'd want to hurt them, though. If they are harassing you on your site, ban them from it; likewise with BYOND messages. If you want a good community, then just ignore the trolls and continue doing whatever it is you do. I haven't seen too much troll activity anyway, aside from your websites incident. |
Ok I was afraid you were gonna say something really bad about my post but you didn't. All I wan't to know is who is struggling with the basics on my site? Can you also prove it?

First off - http://www.byond.com/members/ Sers000?command=view_post&post=1097256&first_unread=1 I don't want to bother with the rest. I went on your website .. it's .. bland boring and that chat comes out of nowhere taking up a block of the screen .. it's annoying ... very... mine isn't any better don't worry I've been trying to find time to update it.. One word - responsiveness. |

I create websites as a profession, and .. yea I would say its bad, it looks like it's been slap together using a free website builder (sorry!), for some reason it took ages for me to load, if you use Firefox go and grab FireBug and look at the Net tab .. the live chat takes 200+m/s to load and the whole site took 900+ m/s to load for the first time .. which is terrible.. it's not user friendly and the chat .. god... get rid of it if people want to contact you they will.
The visitor counter .. no just don't .. it looks tacky... people don't want to see how many visitors have been on the site .. if you want to track it use Google Analytics. Try and stick to one two fonts and a few colours red on dark gray with lines doesn't match, the yellow pops but should be used for key factors of the site that should stand out, the Giant BYOND logo isn't needed if I am going to your site to hire someone for a BYOND project .. I know why and don't need a logo taking up my screen... Do you really need Login/Signup? If you are going to judge my website.. go ahead it's terrible by my standards and needs an overhaul it was created 3 years ago after all. |

Maybe for a professional this is bad but I meant the site as a concept rather than how it is built. It was built by an amateur really.

It may of been done by and amatuer .. but they were using a free site builder called wix (http://www.wix.com/) The whole thing has references to that free website builder. Heres some stuff from the source of the homepage <link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://static.wix.com/client/pfavico.ico" type="image/png"/> |

I don't think the website works for what you want it to do, you don't even have profiles of the "programmers" with portfolios.
I wouldn't hire from the website, it doesn't make me want to and has no information, the cart feature is a bit silly and you want me to pay before seeing anything... it doesn't work like that. |

We have examples of their work.

We have examples of their work. You do .. as Check 1 and 2 .. they aren't doing a mic check. You also push me off to BYOND, I am looking for a programmer I don't want to be pushed off to another site, I am here to hire someone, you should ideally show everything on the page, screenshots, videos and working demos / zips to the files. If I really wanted to hire one of the people you have listed I could copy and paste their key and do my own research on BYOND, skip your services and potentially get a cheaper price, I am sure you get a cut of this? |
70% to the worker, 5% to someone. 10% to the "co-founder" and 15% to the "founder".
Eugene the "Support Agent" confirmed this. |
