It looks like I will have to spend over $85 just for the icons to make this game's demo: Hunter X Hunter: Nen.
ok
you go, girl
I give you .1 points on this advertisement attempt.
What kind of ridiculous replies are these? $85 for just a demo is a lot! I will have to spend about $500 for the whole game if this takes off.
Yeah, for a game, that is not a lot in the least. You are at the lowest tier in terms of paying for games. When you get on Eternia / Spirit Age level, then you have spent a lot. I don't known NEStalgia's expenses.
I don't have that much money man. I will have to wait 4 months to get it.
I'd save your money now before you put too much cash into a future C&D letter.
Make the icons yourself. Get people interested. Maybe let people volunteer to make the art.
Haha you're worried about 500 dollars?

You don't want to know how much it costs to really build a great looking and great sounding game. A single song can cost 500 dollars from a talented composer. A single boss mob can cost double that.

If that's your indie budget, you should raise it somehow or really embrace the fact that its a passion project and pay out of pocket (But don't whine about it).
If you're that worried about expenses, make everything yourself. No use whining about something you'd never be able to do on your own.

Yeah I'm afraid Funimation may get the license for HXH

I just might. I just need to improve my iconning.
Don't think of it in terms of companies that have already confronted BYOND getting hold of it, think of it as someone might get a hold of the current license owner, or they might do a search and find out.

I don't have any secure income. So far I am on disabilities. I am in college and will need to graduate and get a job to truly have money. I didn't know a talented composer can take as *little* as $500? I thought these days that would costs tens of thousands.

What do you mean? I didn't quite get that.

Composers are ranging anywhere from 80 - 150 dollars per finished minute of compositions. A game like World of Warcraft has over 200 minutes of music for example, and for a composer who isn't quite up to Blizzard's standards would be charging about 30,000 for the full OST (and you'd be lucky if you got exclusive rights along with that). I'm sure the guys at blizzard make 100k a year to be blizzard's slave.
Your concern is, you are a bit afraid of Funimation getting the license / rights to HxH. That is where you are thinking wrong. Do not be worried that they might get the license. Be worried that someone could report your game to the current license holders, or that the current license holders could find the game and not be very happy about it.

Even if you cite your sources, it doesn't always mean something.
Also, I didn't realize this was a discussion about creating a non-original IP / game. In that case, don't waste your money. Come up with your own ideas.

Okay. I have a question. How do gaming companies release games based on movies, animes, shows etc... without worrying about what the license holders will say or do? Do they somehow get permission to do it? If so, how do they obtain permission for something like that? Maybe pay a share of their gross profit to the license holders of the shows? How does this truly work? Maybe I can make a deal with HXH license holders?
