OK got a question what do you think works better or appeals more when it comes to town buildings in NES sNES / low bit games
The tile style example http://www.dragon-warrior.com/Images/town01.gif
or full scale building icons example http://www.uffsite.net/ff1/images/maps/elflandmap1.gif
or a mix

The second link doesn't work. Forbidden + 404 error stops it.

It's hot-link protection, just hard-refresh the page.
Anyways, for 2D, I've always preferred having the building's exterior and interior on the same map. From a multiplayer perspective, it also makes finding people easier. For 3D, I prefer the opposite (mostly because of camera issues) |
i've always preferred the appearance of full scale, but I do see the advantages of the tile style in multi-player. I'm personally fine with either, and find it hard to choose.
The game does make a difference, though. For example, in NEStalgia, I liked the tile style that they did, but in Final Fantasy Legacy I preferred the full scale that they did. I guess it depends on the art. |
I guess I don't understand what you are asking. The are both tiled. One just uses a separate shop/indoor interface.
|
If you'll have a lot enterable buildings I think 2nd is better, you'll be able to make smaller cities, leaving more space for game world.
|
I suppose you could mix the two, Maybe for very large buildings have a separate interior but for small shops and things like that have a full scale roof that disappears when you enter the building.
|
For ease of programming, I prefer separate maps for interior and exterior of buildings, the Elfland style. Another advantage of that system is that it allows for buildings to be much smaller on the outside, which allows for more compact town design and speed of navigation (and you aren't really saving a whole lot of map space by combining interior and exterior into one map).
That said, whoever designed Elfland failed Urban Planning 101. There are narrow passages, creating a serious dronejam hazard; the shops are spread all around when they should be clustered near the entrance; and there is way too much of the same color. |

Yes, and I'm still mad that I left off the period (Dr Pepper). After that, the Beattles wrote a song about me.

who names a game Elfland...seriously?
Thats extremely uncreative. Can you imagine the conversation...? "Well we have elves in our game and it takes place on land what should we call it?" |
The game is the original Final Fantasy, and it's the town that is called Elfland. Presumably because there are elves; one can at least credit Square with keep things straightforward.

who names a game Elfland...seriously? It makes more sense in the Japanese mindset. You do have to remember, though, that Final Fantasy almost didn't make the cut. It was the very last thing that Squaresoft was going to make before going bankrupt. Not to mention, that Japanese-English translation for videogames wasn't actually a real career back then. Back then, story was an afterthought to gameplay. Times change, people. |

ElfLand also makes sense to non-japanese people :)

I like how you constantly change your images' host and act like it's the same.

I'm sorry, what? I directly quoted you. Not once, but three times doing just that in one day. Also, stick with imgur. It's a better image host than the ones you've been using. |
