How do you guys feel about a mobile app for developers that would allow them to manage their game hubs, forums and blogs from a mobile device. I suggest this because I don't have a working pc at the moment. And I would still like to be an active member of the forums etc. But using my Android phone makes this prospect kind of tedious. You could charge a small fee for the app that way you could also bring in a little bit more profit to BYOND.

I think if anything, make a byond mobile site version which caters more to viewing it from a phone. Not really a high priority thing as all the features you have asked for are available by accessing the website from a smartphone, but it is obviously not optimized for that purpose.

If this was made, it would have to be free, if someone outside of Byond saw the app, they might inclined to download it to check it out, more people on Byond makes more revenue (and simply keep the current format of removing ads with membership). That being said, there wouldn't be much to do on the app other then browse the forums (from an outsiders perspective), so it might not be that useful. Once flash gets implemented, I could see this having a much greater purpose if we run the flash games on-site. It would also probably be better to get someone outside of Byond to handle this, someone who would know how to build a good site app, also so it doesn't take away the devs from what they currently need to do.

Good point Megablaze. Especially considering the implementation of Flash. People could then play their favorite games from their phone. Anywhere at anytime, in turn possibly bringing more clientele to the BYOND community. Because a lot of people would rather play games with other actual people than some of this one player craptastic games that are currently on the market.

It would be really awesome if someone could port BYOND to Android. A good Android dev would have no trouble I would imagine because I've seen many Linux apps successfully ported to Android.

LibGDX would be the way to go. BYOND multiplayer games wouldn't be optimal on mobile. Single player games and online text muds would translate very well, though. You'd really need a proper client/server model for multiplayer games beyond anything basic. |

The original point of this was an app for the site, not for the games.

I'd like to bump this topic seeing as how I have an Android cell phone and tablet, and would benefit from such an application.

If someone could get me a list to get the information and login I could make an iPhone app and use apportable to convert it over to Android.

Halfway through your post.. I was thinking about that flash idea. And then I read on and saw that you actually spoke of it. Android is actually not really being supported by flash anymore but regardless, we still download it and use it. With BYOND games being ran through flash, and a good phone in your hand, I think making an app that can browse the website nicely as well as switch over to a game portion where there are some easily placed buttons for movement. Or better yet, touch screen capabilities. Games could possibly start being made to support both PC and mobile play. With some drag features I've been seeing around, I don't even thing BYOND would need a big update for this other than optimization. Simply tap the screen on your mobile twice and hold down that second tap and drag that way it clicks and drags. Make a code that when the screen is clicked and dragged the user moves in that direction. Easy. As for using items, put an inventory button on the screen for tapping and then the user can click what they want. The only problem will be lag if your phone isn't that good! |

The perfect game for such a system would probably be Castle. Now we just need to bug Abra and hope he still has the source!

Games like Castle would be good for that, but don't worry; I've actually got some stuff in the works, and projects in mind that could play into this too. Pretty sure Abra is long gone, and I know he lost interest in supporting Castle, but that's okay; there are other options.
I think another important thing to the whole games on the phone thing would be making it possible to define a couple macros. Just a few buttons on the phone would work wonders. Any kind of SNES-like game could easily handle this, for example. You could even create a sort of 'fake' D pad using the numbers. Just very basic, limited, but capable macroing is what I am getting at. |
I have my own little BYOND.com app for the windows phone i have been working on, but all it can really do is browse the forums.
