The beta cycle that wouldn't end has finally ended, and BYOND 515 is now in the stable channel. Thank goodness. I wanted to get that done early in the week to deal with any major bug reports that might come down the pike, but so far things are okay in that area.

The map editor is a big change for a lot of users, and that's going to continue to evolve, both in 515 maintenance releases and in future major versions. By now you've probably seen the pager news I put up on that topic. If you haven't, suffice it to say I'm listening and I very much want constructive feedback, and by that I especially mean please keep that feedback bite-sized and keep the conversation going.

Of course I've been able to pivot further now to 516, so top priority at this point is gonna be getting ready for some alpha builds so power users (mostly that means SS13 devs, of course) can see what needs to change in their browser UIs, and maybe find if any bugs exist under the hood that need addressing.

Don't forget to hit up the fundometer if you haven't already. BYOND is supported by Members, as well as on other channels like Patreon and SubscribeStar, so there's bound to be an option that works well for you. And thanks to all of you who help keep the lights on.

Next week is gonna be crazy but I'm gonna be at the grind as much as I can and keep getting 516 alpha-ready. I have some wild optimization ideas I kinda want to try out, and I'm curious what the outcome of that will be. We'll find out soon enough.
Out of curiosity, why WebView2 and not just CEF?

Won't the latter be a more solid choice for cross-platforming, flexibility and following the proven and blessed practice of staying away from Microsoft whenever possible?

This. All of my this. I hear some of us can run Edge, but I really haven't been able to play since having to switch OSs.

Not really.

CEF is a badly, badly managed project that is extremely difficult (to the point of insanity) to integrate into existing software. I tried a long time ago when it was less mature and ran into huge issues because of its obsessive need to be multi-process, and its messaging is basically incompatible with everything. CEF is guided around the idiotic assumption that you're creating a browser and nothing but a browser, and that it doesn't have to play nice with any other parts of your project.

WebView2 on the other hand is actually well designed, which is absolutely shocking from Microsoft but true. From early on it looked like it would be very nearly a drop-in replacement for the old embedded IE (as close as possible, anyway), and it's lived up to that promise. The switchover was an order of magnitude less painful than I anticipated.

ssooo you're saying there's a glimmer of hope for us linux lusers?

I assume that would only happen if someone can get byond+webview2 running in Wine, which might be doable with newer Wine versions or proton.

Ban management/hardware bans might still be an issue.
My understanding is WebView2 should work in WINE, as best I know. When alpha users have it they'll be able to find out more.
LOL I love ASOIAF!! Re reading dance of dragons atm!!
