I'm hoping for more of a discussion than a simple poll, but the poll is there never the less. Anyways. It has been on my mind for a while now, and I use to always thing Single-Player didn't have much value on BYOND. Now, however, I find myself questioning that.
I can think of a lot of ideas that can be multi-player, but would be less limited if they were used in a single-player, and even so I often lean toward multi-player unless I see no way to make it so.
Why? Because of the limitations on cinematics/cutscenes, and more importantly the fact that BYOND seems to have a lot more multi-player games. Now, honestly, cinematics/cutscenes is clearly just an excuse, even I know that,so it boils down to majority.
I find giving in to that rather annoying, since it is not much different than if I were making an anime game because they are the majority. The more I think about it, the more I think that single-player games have a lot of potential, and the more I believe I may have just freed my mind from a trap it somehow got its self into.
So, the question becomes why do you believe so few single-players exist on BYOND? and do you feel there should be more? Also, if not, then why? What are some good reasons to avoid designing a single-player game? Besides the fact that BYOND has things built in to make multi-player easier to make, of course.
Vote, discuss, debate; I look forward to reading and possibly responding to it all.
Note: Deleted and Re-posted because I updated the question after writing the post, but forgot to update the answers. Didn't see a way to edit it, so here we are. Thanks, LordAndrew, for mentioning that.

Poll: What would you rather see more of on BYOND, single-player or multi-player?

I voted muti-player, as it may be harder to create the same immersion factor as you would have in a single-player, but it is still possible.
|
I voted both, because I have ideas for incorporating the two into one game. If things work out, you may find out what I mean in the future.

I voted both. I like them both equally. Simple, single player games can be done well on BYOND. See this example.
We all know multiplayer games can be done well. That's really what DM was built for. But both can be fun to play. It really depends on my mood. |
Despite BYOND being advertised as handling multiplayer for the developer, I've never found myself really aiming towards making multiplayer games. It introduces a new level of complexity when you have to account for many users, rather than just the one player.
That said, I wish more multiplayer BYOND games incorporated ways to play it single player if you opted to do so. The ones that absolutely require multiple players sometimes proves to be a problem because scraping together enough people to do so just doesn't happen. |
Wow, lot of replies. Nice to see so many peoples thoughts on this. I have to admit I am surprised, with the way things are I figured there would be a lot of negativity about single-player or at least a strong favoring toward multi-player.
I hope things work out, Albro, because I'd love to see that. Which is why I agree with you entirely, LordAndrew. There is a lot, and I mean a lot of additional difficulties, complexity, and thus limitations with multi-player. There is nothing I love more, though, than being able to choose either one when I am playing a game. I did it a lot with Diablo 2, it somewhat applies to most pokemon games, and even before multi-player became so popular a lot of the classic games made it possible to do single or two player. Granted, two player is a lot simpler than multi-player, but still. I think far too much has been lost or changed in the game design process over the last decade or so. I care about quality, the amount of content, length of gameplay, and gaming mode options such as single-player and multi-player a lot more than graphics and videos. A guy I know mentioned that he believed Spirit Age implemented single-player into their story really well despite the game being multi-player, and if that is true that is awesome and I'd like to see more of that. However. I'd also like to see games that you can download to play single-player, or join a server and play multi-player. There are concerns with that, but nothing that I think would be impossible to deal with. I am just liking the idea of more single-player around here more and more the more I think about it. BYOND seems perfect for creating good single-player games that are made in a similar fashion to how games of older consoles were made. |

Ah, I was hoping that would be what you were up to. Hm, the only way I can see connecting them would be if you can play single-player, and then use your savefile in multi-player on the server; that may or may not be what you mean though. I'm sure there are other ways to connect them, after all. I just can't think of any right now.

I refuse to vote because I'm torn. I'm currently making a multiplayer game, the ease to make a multiplayer game is what makes byond so cool. On the other hand, single player game typically are made better and more complete due to no worries about Player class balance issues, admins, and all that.
I'd love to see more single player games if they were actually done well. I think it'd be challenging for Byonders (Dream Seekers, Byondites, Byondlings, etc) to stick to finishing a whole single player game complete with story, it'd be a pain to get halfway past a game and get, "Sorry, didn't finish this cause I got bored, btw if you wanna play COD with me just contact me @-....." |
See above.
Most certainly, like I said, I think BYOND has a better chance of earning a better reputation if developers created more single-player games, instead of wanting to make a multi-player game. Honestly, something like Cave Story(I may be exaggerating here) could easily be created with BYOND, now if that isn't good enough motivation, then I don't know what is.
None that I can think of. People might simply avoid it because others won't play their game if it is not executed right. (i.e., lack of design, horrible storyline, e.t.c)
