Why do people place so much stock in having a hub? They seem to think it's one of the key components of making a game when in reality it's nothing more than simple advertising. Almost every other language out there doesn't have a central site dedicated to their language that also serves as a way to advertise creations using the language. If I make a game in C++ or Java, there's no place I can apply for a hub at so people can see it. I have to get out there and advertise it myself.
If you truly want people see your game and you're not a member, creating your own offsite hub isn't even that hard (there's even a few simple PHP scripts floating around right now that basically pulls all that sort of information from a server).
DM is free, and always will be. The hub is no longer free but that should not be a reason to not make games here. If you run off to some other language, guess what, they don't have hubs either.
You added a third reason to my list. Thanks.

If you guys dont make it fair more complains are going to happen and more non members are going to quit thats what i am trying to say if a non member makes a mario game his first game how is he going to share it its not fair
|
He's going to share it by getting out there and advertising it. As LordAndrew said, no place you look is going to give you a free game development IDE and free webspace to host your game.
99% of the people whining about this not being fair can't even produce anything worth hosting on their own (yet). |
Two things i want to state, both are however in my opinion.
1) The majority of BYOND is consisted with 10-15 year olds. This was and still is mainly due to the anime section of the website. This basically makes every one of them think "i can make a game a million times better than this", they also think "i should get everything for free, i shouldn't have to pay" due to blatant immaturity of realizing a website, and the software itself requires programming, and money to keep it running. Most of them figure that the site is just a hobby like game development itself. "If i can make a game in 10 minutes by stealing a source code, BYOND doesn't need money, because neither did I." or, "If i can make a game around school, and a social life, BYOND can make the site and software without needing money since they have jobs". Most of the kids on here don't realize BYOND is what Lummonx Jr and Tom consider a job, and it is their income. 2) This opinion will be short, and it would also end all of the complaining from people, and most likely even render BYOND to gain more profit. Make the software only useable for Members, or people who have been a member for over two years. In return, make hub creation free again. Then BYOND will be just like most programming softwares and people can't complain, and i wont get irritated at their ignorance. Again, just my opinion, and i know there are many flaws in them. Feel free to point them out. Anyway, thanks for reading this if you even do. |
Well i think it should be fair that both non member and members could make a hub BYOND provides you with a programming language and a development IDE. Why do you feel it's fair to be given free advertising and file storage space as well? Not all the non members have credit cards or paypal so they might not get paid This is really something they need to resolve, as I recall from when I did it paypal accounts are free. And if you're not old enough for at least a debit card, I've have serious qualms about hiring you in the first place. if a non member makes a mario game his first game how is he going to share it its not fair Twitter. Facebook. MSN. E-mail. There are a bunch of available venues and paths that everyone is ignoring, because you're obsessed with having a hub. and more non members are going to quit Because they can't have more free stuff? Good riddance, they weren't contributing anyway. |
D-Cire, that does seem a bit cruel but non members could simply ask friends to make hubs to avoid this which could be a big flaw in your idea, which already happens. Also I think hubs should still be paid for. In the past I hated seeing 100+ hubs of Pokemon that weren't even hosted and they just took up space when I was searching for other games that couldn't be noticed by the large amount of hubs. And by the way, if you make a REALLY good game people will probably buy you membership just because your game is that awesome so shut up, stop wasting your time! And make a game, every second counts and your wasting it on a conversation you'll NEVER win...

I know Tom stated he wants to keep the software free, i just figured under these circumstances it would be easier to make it paid so people would stop complaining. However, as i said this is completely my opinion.
As to the idea there are other alternatives, such as make hubs purchasable. Say $5-$10 for a single hub, but once you have said hub, even after losing your BYOND member status you can still edit it fully. I know your figuring "That doesn't leave BYOND members with any bonus perks as thanks for supporting BYOND". To fix that do something like making BYOND members the only ones able to use the hubs subscriber abilities, therefore giving them a way to earn money back with there creations. You could also make a BYOND member hub section where all member's hubs are shown. There are endless possibilities for that. |
ok i disagree i just wanted to make it as byond members to atleast to be a lower price or make it fair. END OF THIS

... There will always be people who complain about something. Unappreciative kids who don't know what they have until they lose it, like when they lost their hubs. They are now butthurt about it. They are going to have to either mature a bit and see the truth of things or just leave. Even if they leave, there's a high chance they'll be back. All in all, you might as well just deal with the complaining and try to explain to those who do why this stuff happened. No matter what Tom does aside from make everything absolutely free, which would not last long at all before BYOND is shut down because of his bankruptcy, there will always be people complaining. |
Well my basis on buying the rights for a permanent hub was mainly on the concept that hubs are just ads. The software is free, and BYOND Memberships cost money, and come with the rights to make ads. How about letting non-members purchase ads themselves? This could cause a problem of making BYOND Member-made hubs only editable when you are a member, and purchased hubs editable forever after they are bought. It would also help out based on the fact that non-members might not have $24 to spare, but they could have $5-$10 for the rights to one hub. As i said in the last two posts this is all in my opinion and i am in no way saying this is how things should be.
I understand what you mean by there will always be complaining, but i figured at least this way people will realize there games don't depend on a hub, and all a hub is, is an advertisement. |
Easy-to-learn programming language, IDE suite including a graphical editor and compiler. Free. Access to developer resources including full language documentation, libraries, demos, tutorials and graphical resources. Free. Access to forums, including technical support and programming/developer support. Free. Advertising your product on the business's own website. Costs money. I still don't understand why people feel that this is unfair. |
Well there are some kind of offensive posts here claiming anyone who doesn't think Byond hubs should be a part of the membership system are idiots or something.
It is mearly my opinion. Without a hub it's pretty hard to get your game any attention, because advertising outside of byond attracts people who are unfamiliar with byond, meaning they are less likely to come by your creation. I was lucky enough to create a hub before they became part of the membership plan, but now I can't edit certain aspects that I could before. I'm a bit disgruntled, I'm not complaining or demanding a change, this is just my opinion. I'm not a 13 year old BR kid demanding free stuff. |
