Can you survive?
Ok, so it sound a -little- childish, but I've been really enjoying some of the casual games on Roblox (www.roblox.com) lately, occasionally one will pop up, like can you survive a burning space-ship? I'd like to see a few more of these SS13ish games on BYOND. But maybe something simpler, like a ten minute round, or less. With only one mode which is usually quite tough to complete!

I'll be starting mine today

Rules are as follows;
1.no using external libraries
2.must be a new environment
3.has to be completed by 05/01/2012 12:00 am
no prize atm, if you could make a few suggestions, i could come up with something ;) good luck guys

edit:
Albro1: Is there any reason you are restricting library usage?

Bumblemore: Cus I just want to see what people can do with their own knowledge, feel free to refer to libraries if you're stuck, but use your own code.

^ Feel free to use libraries as a reference.
$15. That's a good prize for a simple contest.

Cus I just want to see what people can do with their own knowledge, feel free to refer to libraries if you're stuck, but use your own code.

btw vrocaan i dont have much experience with online money transferal, perhaps you could help? £5 could be a decent prize but i dont know how far that goes in dollars
I'd suggest using Paypal, or offering to buy the winner a £5 game on Steam. Libraries are used to add advanced features. Using one does not make you a bad programmer, let alone not knowledgeable.

Well, I just wanted to see what people could do by themselves, I didn't want to make you angry. If that was indeed what I was doing, but, hey. the steam voucher idea seems decent!

They are also used to add something that is trivial and time-consuming, allowing you to continue with the rest of the game without wasting time that could've been used more productively.

Bumblemore, don't become the next Falacy. There are certain ethics to programming, but surely anyone who participates in this contest is very likely to understand those ethics already. Stealing code is obviously wrong. With these ethics in place, just let their creation do the talking. If they use a library, they need have at least a moderate understanding of it to even use it. So, personally, I'd suggest just letting them go with a bit of a longer chain and see what comes out of it.

In the end it is your contest, though, so it's your choice.

who is falacy
Falacy is another (infamous) member who somewhat publicly announced people shouldn't use libraries. He's also notorious for being quite stubborn or rude when someone openly disagrees with him.

This is pure silliness; a library is there so that you can include functionality that is trivial but very labour-intensive to produce, and they are in no way 'cheating' - refusing to use libraries is a bit like refusing to use a blueprint to help you produce a piece of machinery, or a calculator to solve equations. They're there to be used.

Any professional, industry-employed programmer will have used libraries. As Albro1 said; you have to understand a library's API in order to use it anyway, so it's not like someone with no knowledge or skill in the language can just cobble libraries together into a game.

This. Not allowing the use of libraries is silly in the context of this contest.
well, i try not to be rude, but the real aim for this -failed- contest was to see what people could do by themselves. true; i should have put alot more effort into preparing it, but i never intended to be nasty
btw i find creating things using totally my own content is actually really fun and rewarding when the end product has been finally created!

While I may have the knowledge to create, let's say, a pixel movement library. There is already one that exists that would be vastly more organized and have more features than the one I could produce in the limited time allowed in your contest. At the end of the day, you'd end up spending more time building the core of the game than the actual game play, which is not gratifying.

This contest never appeared to be structured correctly. It appeared more like a "spur of the moment" thought that you tossed together and posted. While I really do like the theme of this contest, I believe you could have (and still can) executed it better.

Either way, did you produce an entry? If so, I would love to see it.
indeed i did, it's like a plane burning simulation, the players have to survive whatever means necessary!
