Make it red, that way everyone knows it's bad and will hurt you.

No, make it glow red every second or so, until it turns solid red, and goes through an instant metamorphosis into some kind of hideous flying monster. Now you have to kill them quickly, before they turn into something worse!
Edit: Sorry, I was talking about the grub things, not the laser. I kind of like how you can't tell if it's a camera or a laser. It adds some paranoia and depth to the game. Maybe only some of them are dangerous. |

Are we supposed just assume it's an enemy? Before the bug fell from the sky, I assumed it was a security camera which would seal off the path ahead if it caught you. That's a mechanic found in several games, why not this one? It's fairly clear that it won't seal off the path since there's no way to get past it, that would break the game unless there was some mechanic that prevented it, in which case you'd either know that from previous encounters or you'd figure it out very quickly. |
I mainly do it for enemies which can be dangerous to the player without initially looking that way. It seems a few people have already confused it with a camera and I don't want the game to be entirely merciless to players that just start.
I'd say there's only a few (2-3 out of 30+?) that will actually show what they do before they do it to the player. Almost all of them will be in the first few areas of the game. Another reason I'm doing this is to give a bit of life to the world. First, the dropper plants, which I'm now calling "Florahk"'s, drop down and kill the grub as a way to show how nature works on this planet, where plants can be just as carnivorous and mobile as some creatures on Earth. The turret shooting the grub (along with the gates) shows that the area is supposed to be restricted on pain of death, or at least that the grubs are a pest on this planet and are killed regularly. Of course, I'll be doing other stuff to give life to the world that doesn't involve the death of squishy bugs, but I almost want this to be a running joke. |
[Redacted]:
- Fixed a bug pertaining to PvP during intermission. - Fixed a bug where fire wouldn't be drawn properly for molotovs. - Can toggle focus between the chat and game window with Enter now. - Instead of Q+arrow keys to throw special weapons, you'll now use Space+arrow keys. - Cleaned up and finished dynamic lighting (i love colored lights). - Fires and explosions both give off light now. - Burning and Bleedout debuffs do marginally less DPS now. - New special; Heal -- Can be used to heal a mob in front of you(can't self-heal with it). - Acquiring the fireproof perk can now remove pre-existing burning debuffs. - New weapon; Revolver -- short range but powerful. - New weapon; Club -- first melee weapon! - Sprinting has been replaced with a short distance dash. - Player indicators now take after the player's custom color. - Drops now despawn after one minute. I think I'm going to spend a better part of tonight working on getting sound effects implemented. First I want to finish getting the SK-47 to shoot lasers and get the knife gun drawn up, though. |

Will you use flick's dohiki to make your flames :]? I absolutely love flick's particon thing it makes everything so pretty. |
No, I'll be using the existing fireball projectile and having it drop fire hazards as it goes! Particon is cool, but not something I'd use. :p
Edit: - Finally got knockback working with enemies! - Fireball projectiles are much slower now. |

More last minute updates for the night;
- Dashing has a chance to remove burning debuffs. - Players are now invulnerable while dashing. - Players can now dash through fire hazards without getting burnt. - Fireball projectiles are now also a light source. |
