Internet Explorer 11 still exists as a separate thing from Edge, as far as I know. It's not literally the new IE, just metaphorically.

A lot of older software needs IE, like BYOND so they had to keep it..

You guys are insane. I advise you all read this https://edri.org/microsofts-new-small-print-how-your-persona l-data-abused/ I always thought the bad part about windows 10 was that you can't turn off updates. Also : by default, Windows 10 uses your internet connection to share updates with other users. +Apparently the bundled solitaire game asks for money (like micro-transactions lol) Also, here is my personal memory stats with windows at a stand still (nothing running) and linux at a stand still. Windows kicks up to 2GB with a browser. Linux kicks up to 1gb with a browser. I'll probably be skipping this one. W7 still seems to be the better option. |
It's using less memory than Windows 8.1 did for me, but Windows 7 was better than both. However, I am very much enjoying it so far, everything is smooth, responsive. A few hiccups here and there but nothing crazy.
I dislike the new three-finger touchpad gestures, I had some custom ones setup in Windows 8 like three-finger swipe left to do a browser-back, right for forward, etc... But, I imagine before long there'll be a utility to override that stuff, even if I am already beginning to enjoy the touchpad controls for switching between things :) |
I had Classic Shell from hour one with Windows 8.1, I anticipated that nonsense.

I was going to, but then I read the terms and said "No thanks". My OS's work just fine so I don't really need to upgrade anyway and nothing I play uses DX12 yet. There are some benefits to it, like hardware accel. OS but there are a lot of cons too (such as social networking tied into the OS and a lot of forced arbitration clauses, forced system updates, subscription cost for system functions or things like solitaire(!), etc).
@Nadrew - yeah, classic shell is a must! @EmpirezTeam - My problem with cortana is that it isn't a holographical display like in halo and thus not worth it. :) |

You need HoloLense for that, duhhhh.

Second day of use:
I am overpowered by how much I like edge. It is swift and great for porn ... I mean YouTube, Facebook, and any other web browsing. However, the support for some websites is not there yet, I hope to see improvement in the next few weeks. I do not like the way Edge scrolls down on webpages, if it is a constant page like Facebook newsfeed and you constantly scroll down the scroll bar on the right has a heart attack, I hope to see them smooth this out too. New operating system means refresh in registry, defaults reset and so on. So obviously it feels faster right now ... I hope it stays fast. I did notice Windows Explorer is a lot more inefficient on the processor, but that could be just me, I transfer TB's of data a week. Setting default programs is not as easy as it used to be ... AND I see articles Chrome and Firefox are pissed that Edge is forced to be the default program when you do an upgrade .. Microsoft STAHP! |
Forced? So there's no way of switching it over? Lel, well played Mr. Gates. Well friggin' played.
If I recall correctly they did something else regarding browsers in the past as well to encourage people to use IE or something. I think they made Bing not work on Firefox and Chrome or something to that effect, can't remember exactly. People inevitably found a workaround though. We always do. |

Switching default browsers isn't limited in the slightest.
What is limited though is the search engine that Cortana uses. She uses Bing and you can't change that, but there apparently is already a Chrome extension to redirect the search to Google. |

Switching default browsers isn't limited in the slightest. Basically, Win10 is the exact opposite of a fully featured operating system that allows you to use the PC as you want. It is the first OS where microsoft wants to force you to use the OS how they want (not even mentioning instead of blocking all of the tracking/spying/etc they just built it right into the OS!). They want to always know your real name and want to utilize anything you say and do against you. The link someone posted earlier, which I will repost (https://edri.org/microsofts-new-small-print-how-your-persona l-data-abused/), describes some of what microsoft is up to. Basically, it is the exact opposite of what everyone was taught in the 90's (Don't put personal info online) except as an Operating System! It is disgustingly scary how far microsoft went to cater to intelligence agencies (automatic backdoors, password backups, encryption key backups that they all have access to) and corporations. I probably won't ever install Win10; That is just how bad it is. People said Microsoft couldn't do worse than Vista and I suppose they took it as a challenge! :) TL;DR~ Win10 is a Facebook OS. |
U can always... Use fake info your not forced to use your real info I mean only a idiot would put in their social if asked :)

It doesn't matter whether you use your personal info because they will be collecting all of the data you produce. I was kind of excited for Win10 because it was claimed to be a free upgrade, but it is just more of the same from microsoft. It isn't free and it won't battle piracy because pirates can't use it! From the link: "Summing up these 45 pages, one can say that Microsoft basically grants itself very broad rights to collect everything you do, say and write with and on your devices in order to sell more targeted advertising or to sell your data to third parties. The company appears to be granting itself the right to share your data either with your consent “or as necessary”." See that last part? The "As necessary" is a form of legal mumbo-jumbo that is so vague it gives them broad capability. They've built the OS around collecting your data to utilize its features and thus it will always be considered "necessary". With Win10, you can no longer anonymously use your computer and I think that was microsoft's objective all along. |

It isn't about me or my personal information, it is much bigger than that. You may not care, but others do and you can't expect them to be like you. I sign plenty of petitions online so I am not too concerned with my name either but that doesn't mean I want my operating system to function like a social networking offbranch. |
Yeah, I agree with Kaiochao's view on it. I trust Microsoft enough not to do anything bad with it.
If they did anything bad, they would end up losing a large portion of their userbase to iOS/Linux - effectively sabotaging themselves in the "OS war". I don't think they want that. |

All of these entities work in cahoots with the corporations and the system. Facebook is essentially a government entity now and their only intent is to harvest as much information as they can in any way possible. I am not trying to convince you not to use the OS, I am merely pointing out what it is. :) We have rights and even if you don't care about them, others do care about upholding them. Thanks. With something as important as my daily computing, which is basically my life, I do not trust Microsoft or any other corporation for that matter. They must earn such a right and so far they have only done wrong in that facet. |
Actually, after my father spent 20 minutes looking for Internet Explorer while trying out the Windows 10 tech preview and missing the memo that Project Spartan was the new IE, I can safely claim that the name change to Edge was actually a well made choice on Microsoft's end, if only for the purpose of keeping the familiar "e" desktop icon, saving the aged 50+ from the unneeded anxiety of rediscovering how to access the Internet.
