OK well I don't even know how well this will go over. I noticed for a long time now that GunBuddy's Mystic Journey has been all but dead for awhile now. It has been kept alive simply with fan servers and apparently some of them are pretty bad, after considering the staff that runs them.

I have been tinkering with a fan sequel of sorts for MJ. It doesn't use any sort of ripped source code, and for the most part the maps have been redesigned. I simply log into MJ from time to time to get references.

I had a question though, especially for MJ fans, what was your favorite aspect of the game, and what was your least favorite? I haven't done a whole lot, but I have a few plans in the works, such as implementing a new race to the game.

I'd like to reiterate that I am not using any source code, or stole material from the game. Thanks.
Why?

Somebody just remade the game from the ground up. Let him do that stuff and you make your own game. We don't need more of the same games.

Really? Someone just made the game from the ground up? Really? Well direct me to it please.

The AI was my favorite part. They were always fun opponents, though predictable, one of the better AI's I've seen, as far as I can tell.

The lack of story was my least favorite part. Not much needs to be said, there, because anyone who's played it will probably agree.

GL on the game, though, I'd probably play it.
Unfortunately the world map has changed so much in my own version that I am afraid I might not even be able to call it a fan sequel. The town looks spot on, but the rest does not. Does anyone have any maps of the orginal game?

Take a look at Miller822's and Teoami's servers. Johan recoded the game from the ground up; new items, new areas, new monsters, and even a new interface. The only downside that I can see is that the battle system is noticably off.

Why make an unofficial sequel of a (dead) game when you can make an official, original game of your own? :O
In response to GhostAnime
I wouldn't exactly call it dead. While the original doesn't receive "official" updates anymore, the players have been shown to keep the game very much alive. They've even (finally) remade the game for their own updates. Although, I'm not sure how much better Johan will be for the game than Gunbuddy was.

My point, as well as GhostAnime's point, still stands; make your own game.

I'll do what I want.

Sorry, let me fix that. You should make your own game so you do not cater to the inclination of others to play rips. Also, if you do a good job, you can make a bit of money off of it.

Doesn't really matter anymore. I had put a second HD in my computer and it had a old install of Windows XP on it, and it caused a boot problem. (I thought I could just boot up the master and format the slave in windows).

So I just popped in a Windows XP disk and formatted what I thought was the correct drive I wanted to wipe. Unfortunately it wasn't. I lost everything on the HD.

I had to start over, and I just decided to go in a different direction. It is defiantly going to give a wink and a nod to Mystic Journey, but I am not going to call it a "fan sequel".

That being said on the side. I am fairly sure since MJ has been discontinued, people could make money off it. I mean, apparently people are STILL paying for memberships and stuff for the servers, to other people, on private servers.

Considering that people have to alter save files just to get the host up and running and GunBuddy obviously didn't want everyone hosting the game, I am surprised that BYOND doesn't simply remove the hub entry all together.

Just as a side note. If Gunbuddy13 wanted the hub removed he could have done so himself rather easy, so I would say BYOND should not take such measures, given the fact they obviously contradict the customer's wish.

Actually, he did, at one point, remove the hub entry. He put it back up "by popular demand." Of course, "by popular demand" means that he was tired of being bothered about it.

And now it is gone!

Wow. I lol'd. Gunbuddy must be keeping tabs on us.
Where's the new one? I don't see it.

Yeah your right, I see that the banner looks kind of new. Although that doesn't necessarily mean anything. GunBuddy was gone a long, long time. Why would he just magically just appear and then give us a new version?

He grew up?

Ditch the original maps. How often do sequels use the same maps as the originals? That's boring, people have already played those maps. Don't remake the game, remake the aspects people liked and create a new game world with new content to play with.
In response to Foomer
Yeah I know, I already came to that conclusion. Besides, with GunBuddy's mysterious return and changing the hub entry and hiding it and stuff, it makes you wonder if he is going to be updating it or not. And lets be honest here, if a fan of Mystic Journey had a choice between Mystic Journey or a fan copy, then I think they'd choose the original.
