i HATE the new BYOND front look. It is lame, unprofessional and cheesy. Also it takes a REALLY long time to load and i have an amazing connection. Also, sadly enought i am in 9th grade and i could make that same thing in like an hour, it really sux.

Seriosly, i mean i cant STRESS ENOUGH how crappy the new BYOND page looks and i am pissed that i no i cant change anything

I think it looks professional <<
It is also very helpful for newcomers, I don't see how it will scare away newcomers

What exactly is unprofessional?

It doesn't, it just makes the front page look bad in YOUR eyes, not in others' eyes.

and it will scare away new people. Also it takes a REALLY long time to load and i have an amazing connection.

I have an average connection and it loads perfectly fine and quite fast.

Really, you're exxagerating too much. Take a Pepsi and write down on how to improve it rather than how it sucks in your eyes. Complaining doesn't bring you anywhere, advising does. =)

hey if BYOND ever does need to use flash, then Pepi (that is his key and name) IS AMAZING AT IT AND CAN DO ANYTHING. He woulsd probably be happy to help and do it for free.

But i agree, flash isnt good

i no what you (and the others who dont like wwhat i wrote) are saying and i agree that that is my opinion, but look at it this way.

You go to a new site that your or any of your friends have never heard of. You see a cool gradient bg, but everythign else is such a simple code that you think: "Hey, this site is pretty cool but it looks like its run by a ten year old who went to a summer camp at the YMCA for a week and learned how to code."
it works the same with any game you see on the hub. You look at the hub icon and if it is all streached out, pixalated, with a horrible font color in Times New Roman, you think that they have no clue what they are doing so you dont play. (same with icons in the game, not just hub icon)

When I said eight and a half years, I was counting 2007 since it is pretty much here. =P

You admit that it is limited to just your opinion, yet you try to say that everyone dislikes what you dislike. Not everyone has your view on things, including the newcomers.

By the way, how did you come to the conclusion that that is the definite version of the frontpage?

When I visit a site, I expect it to be very simple and user friendly. The first time I came to BYOND a few years back, I found it very confusing to navigate. I think it is thousands of times better. And as for HUB entries, YOU(the HUB Entries' owner) edit how it looks, so if it is in some horrible color in Times New Roman or whatever, and the graphic sucks, it is your fault, not BYONDs.

Let the tweaking begin...

To add to what Mike said: A lot of what we needed to get through were simply some technical items on making new front pages work, and figuring out how we wanted to present the nature of BYOND to new users. Now that we have the pages in place and functional, it's much easier to to tweak them.

If you have a better idea for how they should look, feel free to provide a treatment (it can even just be an image, you don't have to tweak the exact HTML) and we'll consider it.

Meanwhile, we do feel these give new users a better chance of understanding what's going on with BYOND, and hopefully are less likely to turn them off than when they were just dumped to the BYOND games page.

One small tweak- the game logos on the front page (next to "What is BYOND?" etc. should, when clicked, bring you to the hub page of that game. Then if someone says "Hey, robots? That looks cool!" they can instantly check out the game.

I was also going to post some alternative banners using icons/characters from existing BYOND games, but I got bored half-way through so I didn't make any.

i admitt its my opinion and i am stating that many ppl feel that way, such as all the people i personaly know who play byond (something around 20) ...

and i never was guarenteed that it was the final site, so i never completly thought that but i assumed because i figured they wouldnt make it public unless they didnt like it alot and want to keep it already ...

this entire thing takes up a whole browser page O_O

think it can make it to the next page (is that possible ???)

btw i got a poll going to c wat ppl think:
http://games.byond.com/hub/Devin148/NewByondPage

currently 24 no, 18 yes

[EDIT] http://developer.byond.com/download/ i like that i like how it picks my OS up and displays the correct download.

But it still looks a lil childish.

For anyone who doesn't like the current pages, you can cure yourself by looking at my prototype before the talented Gug and Mike got ahold of it...

That actually looks quite good! Is this the final version of the current page?

Nope...that was the 0.1 version...

But we'll no doubt tweak the current page over time.

heres an idea
create a new subdomain
start.byond.com redirect new users there by default
and when they sign up give them the choice to switch the redirect to games.byond.com or dev.byond.com
I personally think the new layout is confusing to navigate. The old page (game.byond.com) allowed me to get where I wanted to be very quickly without having to search for the tiny, out of the way and hard to find links as you do now. For instance, the link to the developer page is at the very bottom and reads something like "we have free developer tools". From the onset, it's very hard to tell that byond is a game making suite, rather it gives the appearance of being another free collection of web-games or something like that. (Imo, anyway)

Also the center banner that shows screenshots of games is tiled itself, and if you take any kind of close look you can spot the same games being repeated which makes it look like the byond staff did so purposely to mask a lack of content.

However, on the positive side, if they mean to attract more players it's not that bad, but it makes it confusing for the existing community.

Good, cause it's for new people -- the existing community should bookmark games.byond.com and it's just like the old days.
