I really wish Tom and Dan could get back together and develop a much needed complete revision of the language.
Some features: - Flash-based (Adobe Air?) interface (cross platform) - Increase FPS of client to 60 FPS. - Client-Side renderings - Clean up the language as a whole, improve syntax structure (I'm looking at you winset() and winget()!) |
O-o, nah that can't be, Dan definately uploaded himself into the internet through his powerful programming and is now a being more powerful then humans can understand.

That BYOND contest was interesting we had a while back, I wish more things like that were arranged, but I'd rather have them work on a rewrite or at least a major syntax change of some of the newer features, and overall improvements to the networking backend.
I mean, I understand when Dan and Tom originally wrote it, it was designed to be a MUD creator, it was never intended for what it is doing today. |
- Increase FPS of client to 60 FPS. You can lower world.tick_lag to increase the frame rate. - Clean up the language as a whole, improve syntax structure (I'm looking at you winset() and winget()!) This seems like an unfortunately low priority. Our best bet is to deal with these problems with libraries. Here's my personal to-do list of features that need fixing: overlays icons images screen objects scores interface controls keyboard/mouse input naming conventions I have one library for interface controls and another for overlays and mouse input (and will be expanded eventually to include keyboard support, fix naming conventions, and possibly deal with images). |
I agree, and before Tom comes in saying that I'm insulting him. I'm not. I could never even begin to put together this community or build a engine like he and Dan has, I just wish it could be improved for the benefit of BYOND itself.

Not accepting your proposal doesn't mean that this won't happen, it's just not going to happen the way you proposed. There are more practical ways that DM and BYOND can be improved.

I replied to a specific quote, which expressed regret on exactly what was suggested in the denied feature request, next to word by word.
I by no means claimed that BYOND could never and would never be improved in more efficient, but less global ways. It would be really nice if we could stop derailing threads by you trying to straw man reasoning on my points. |
If your original post doesn't properly represent your own argument don't be surprised when I can't properly represent your argument either. Your argument exists in your head, then you put it into words, then I read the words. My interpretation of your argument is based on what you wrote, your interpretation of your argument is based on what you think. My interpretation isn't likely to match yours when there's a disconnect between what you think and what you write.
As long as this disconnect exists every response will seem like a straw man but it's not intentional. Instead of treating every reply as an underhanded, personal attack, find a way to write a reasonable response and clarify your original point. By clarifying your original point you keep the thread on track. Few things derail a thread faster than the phrases "straw man" and "logical fallacy". |
A few months ago, I found Dan's home address, that same University site, and information about his city approving him to install Solar Panels on his house, srs.

I like how he doesn't mention anything about Byond on what he has done.

EG: What is your current job now?
Dan: I work for the University of Wisconsin on a distributed computation system called Condor. I focus on developments needed by the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider.
