The truth of the matter is, right now, the Nay/Yea feature is a pointless one. As far as my last post about it has taught me is that it has no real benefits to BYOND members or serves any real purposes.

Not only that, it seems as though there are certain BYOND members who are dedicated to simply naying any post they can find, which isn't constructive to BYOND in the least.

I was recommended to just use a CSS "trick" to hid the Nay/Yea features on my blog, which I used and was helpful. Unfortunately Koil recently released to the community a fire-fox add-on that would automatically disable this trick for anyone who would want to do so.

This is.... Annoying. The Nay/Yea feature has no real purpose except to annoy people as can be seen by some of our other BYOND members and can at times be discouraging or largely negative.

Word on the internet is, Facebook hasn't added a "dislike" feature because simply because it avoids any extra negativity/flaming/trolling the option could bring with it. It's simple as "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."

So I am petitioning BYOND, either make the Nay/Yea feature a useful one that has an actual impact on BYOND or allow us to disable or remove this feature from our blogs.
Perhaps they can make it so that when someone casts a vote for something that it shows on their profile. So if someone is being immature and always voting nay, on their profile it will show exactly how many nay's, and to what, they have.

I think that could prevent some of the damage (IE: stupid kids trying to harrass people they are jealous of).

The Nay/Yea feature is geared more towards helping the moderators. If I recall, posts that receive a higher nay-to-yea percentage will be displayed to the moderators. They obviously review the post and, if needed, remove it. Those posts that were "improperly" nay'd will remain on the front page.

I find it difficult to come up with a reason why certain users become so upset when they receive a few nays. If your post is not lacking content nor is it a spur of the moment insult, that nay you received is usually from a troll. So ignore it.

What Koil released should not affect you at all. Your goal was to remove the visible nays from your blog, this has been accomplished.
If you aren't posting something that you wouldn't nay yourself, you shouldn't be complaining. A random nay or two from a random nayer is not going to hurt your post at all.
Yeas/nays have always been able to be re-added, I've done it through a grease monkey script someone wrote upwards of a year ago. Either way, if you care so much about nays, then don't look at them; they're a decent moderation tool for the staff (except for when people abuse them, haha).

If it is geared toward helping the moderators than please tell my why it needs to be public? Provide a "Nay" option but keep it private. This will reduce trolling and makes the "Nays" more meaningful to the moderators.

It's a trolling feature and nothing more. My post got "Nay" votes because I don't choose to display the "Nay" option. How do I even know why people are naying me? How is this even remotely useful to me? The only thing it does is frustrate me.

Ignoring them is easier said than done.

To Nay, you can simply disable CSS in your browser so it doesn't require anything fancy.

There's also a guild dedicated to naying posts now. You cannot tell me anything good will come from this.

Perhaps its a ying/yang thing and BYOND knows it. Without the evil, everyone would be bored to tears. Perhaps... I could do without it. It's like your letting the anime rip off folks bleed into my life through this medium.

Maybe they are just a bunch of horses....etc.

I agree though, if the ability is simply to help moderators then it should be hidden because honestly there are too many sub-par IQ levels and ages in this community to be responsible or even mature when it comes to not agreeing with others.

This feature, if used correctly, can be helpful. I have come across blog posts that were quite informative, but I had nothing significant to offer. Thus, instead of providing a comment that simply "Yeas" the post, I supplied the blogger with a "Yea+". This informs him or her that their post was excellent.

If you are that bothered over a few nays might I suggest finding a different medium to display your work? When blogging and allowing others to comment, you are opening yourself up to receiving opposing opinions. Those opinions may be expressed through the Nay/Yea feature.

By removing the visibility of the Nay/Yea feature through CSS, you are accomplishing your goal: you will no longer see the "nays" your post has acquired.

There is also a guild dedicated towards insulting those who continuously make mistakes (Usually through blogging). Shall we remove the front page as well?

The BYOND staff cannot babysit the whole community. There will always be a few bad apples and you will have to learn how to deal with them. Honestly, I feel that we waste too much time on petty problems.

People in this community get quite offended over small "problems". The best advice I can provide is to ignore the trolls. By giving them attention, you are giving them another reason to continue.

My suggestion is to provide "Yeas" and "Nays" but the Nay tally is hidden from public view. We bloggers get what we want and moderators get what they want. Trolls get starved. It seems like a win/win to me.

Trolls are trolls. If you remove the means of their trolling, they'll find another. If you try to hide their trolling, they'll troll through more public means. They'll just comment with "Nay" (some already do). Admittedly, you can then delete those comments, but I think the end effect on the blog-owner is more or less the same.

The way it is now, at least the blog's owner can hide the nays so they don't have to look at them. It's dumb, but... that's the Internet. Many of our tubes are filled to the brim with dumb.

I like not having a byond membership and also not having to deal with litle kids on a blog.

So much useless stress from such a mundane activity - Why even blog at all? The more time you spend "blogging" the less time you are actually doing anything of real value at all.

Another reason I dislike social networking, all these people chitchatting about what they are doing ...but they are so busy chatting they aren't actually doing anything at all. The forums provide as much functionality that I need from byond. Also I am too poor to consider "supporting" byond by getting a membership.

I'm kind of glad I'm missing out on the cell phone, texting, facebook/twitter bs. Because honestly, its really just fun to sit back and watch the masses carol together like cows heading to the slaughter, feeding such a horrible company like Apple so much money.

The best bet has already been suggested; Move on with your day and get over your "nayed" blog posts, as it has no real impact on the world at all and neither do blogs in the first place. Kids will be kids, and the more mature will be Adults.
People sure do get butt hurt about the possibility of someone naying what they post, some even go as far as to hide the yay/nay because they couldn't possibly bear to see the little nays show up on their posts.

It's to help the mods, and a way for the community to tell if your post is a bad post, or a good post. If you're getting a lot of nays it's probably because you made a stupid post. People only use it to troll if you show you're bothered from it.

Yes, the fact that you even have to ask that means you're a horrible moderator.
Somebody's about to hit you in the face with a bat, should you duck?
A guild dedicated to trolling should, without question, be removed, and possibly have every member banned.

Multiple people are here complaining about something, you should probably take it into serious consideration. And though I don't really use any of the blog systems myself, the yeas/nays sound like a poorly thought out, and even more poorly used (or more like abused) system. If they don't mean anything then why are they there? If they're only used by mods then why are they publicly visible? There should be some sort of "report for [x]" feature if that's the case. Not being able to see what people have yead/nayd seems to make them even more pointless.
In response to Calus CoRPS
You can still see this stuff from the front page. And it's simply the idea of the thing. It's stupid and annoying. If BYOND members need a way to moderate blog posts, simply add a flag option that would alert BYOND staff that someone found a blog post probelmatic.

Actually, yeah they should.

The fact that you misunderstood what he said means you're a horrible reader (using your words).

Calus CoRPS wrote:

He references the front page as a whole, not banning a specific guild's blog posts from appearing there, in relation to comparing the feature and functionality of the system in question.

As for multiple people complaining, that is a given fact on anything in life. You won't ever manage to find something that everybody likes and agrees on. I would, without knowing myself, assume that Tom and Lummox JR constantly evaluate benefits against possible dislike on every feature they provide and act accordingly, because, unlike us, they have more accurate figures and thus can provide a better assumption based on that empiric data.

Apparently o.O

You're doing it wrong!

I don't really feel the argument, "lots of people complain about a lot of things" really apply here. We aren't talking about a lot of things, we are talking about a online community with a feature that is some what questionable in it's functionality, a feature that could most likely have had been implemented better.

There is obviously users here who feel the same way and would like for the feature to be changed or removed altogether. But, let's be honest here, BYOND staff rarely do anything to fix a problem or issues their users are having, they just tell them to get over it.

I'm glad Teka paid for my last membership, because unless BYOND changes their tune, I know I won't be contributing anymore money to a community where the staff basically ignores their users.

But in reality, I'd have preferred that someone like Tom or another figure that actually have a final word on these things talk about and deny my request. I wonder if he takes the same bullshit stances as the rest of the mods.

In which case the people with that desire should request the feature to be adjusted and provide a detailed description of the scenario they have in mind. All people are doing in the community forum is arguing on something.

Ham Doctor wrote:

<sarcasm> You're completely right. Suggestions and problems are completely ignored, which is why this lame two man team only released 29 updates to the software suite (not including the various patches on the web) last year (2009). </sarcasm>

Ham Doctor wrote:

And that would certainly happen once you request the feature to be adjusted and provide a detailed description of the scenario you have in mind.

We aren't talking about the BYOND software here, we are talking about the BYOND community. And as we all know, BYOND rarely does anything about trolling or flaming unless it directly effects them in some sort of fashion. They have since even backed down to fan games taking donations. Starting to get real lame around here.
