Since theres so many ignorant people that can't fill out simple support forums, isn't there a way through Javascript to generate the forum template by itself?
Now that BYOND's tightly integrated with the pager, it shouldn't be hard, to grab the system information, right?

Exactly, filling out the forum manually is always more superior as you can include extra information or footnotes if needed, etc, next to the actual info, and prevent any misdetection on the JavaScript's part. And if someone "forgot" to fill it, you can always remind them in a reply.

When someone fills out that their OS is simply "Windows" or that there CPU is "Windows", or that there Graphics Card is "I DUN KNOW" there not going to fill it out properly even if you ask them to.

Not exactly accurate but something along this could work for some things. George Gough |

If that's true for someone, then his report is very likely useless as a whole, anyway, so it doesn't matter. If he doesn't put in enough effort and sense to write down his OS, chances are the rest of his post won't be very intelligible either.

OK then, what about we revive this a bit, say we can automatically fill out the support forum via something on our computer where we define all the stuff so for us that might have unfortunately more bugs than most people, we don't take so long to be able to report our bugs the next time.
Of course, in case something is new we could manually change it as well, in case something is different, and then we could manually change it later ourselves when we got tired of it putting in constantly the wrong information....or just full detection...it doesnt usually detect wrong anyways...ive never had it once detect wrong... EDIT:for bad detections where it cant just detect then it would just allow you to put the stuff in manually anyways...i dont see much a problem here. |

But then, you still quite depend on expecting the reporter to do his job and fill out the report - so you might as well leave it like this in the first place. This doesn't seem worthy of BYOND Staff Time.

true, but it still makes it easier on people who actually care, the ones who dont do it, wont do it anyways, either way, so who cares? if they want their computer to still have problems with the software, then they just dont fill out the bug report correctly, and go right on ahead.

BYOND Help was having lots of issues with this. That's partly the reason why I wrote All about the BYOND Help forum. If you're desperate, I could write one for the dev forums as well. Then all you have to do is refer them. |

Or perhaps include an option in the BYOND Pager that prints out information about this?
File > Support Forum Log? |

I suppose, albeit still not necessary, it could be a slight help for reports, when the reporter is so clueless they don't know how to check their OS/hardware/whatever. Hopefully this being non-automatic will persuade them to read it and so fix any errors/misdetections, though things like displaying the OS and BYOND version would be quite breakproof, though somewhat extraneous as checking them is, well, easy anyway.

The plugin that was introduced in version 421 is just a stub--it doesn't do anything useful like actually provide a version number. As far as OS goes, I'm not sure that'd be easy to pull from a script, but if so it'd be a script we'd have to keep maintained across new OSes. It seems like the work to do this would have little benefit when you can always just tell people to fill out the form.
