I am thinking about buying an EeePC, and instead of killing the SSD with EeeXubuntu, I'd rather install it on a SD card to use it as an actual "harddrive".

I like a girl...
* that's fast and responsive (I'd like one of the fastest available on the market)
* with a "large storage capability".
* One that I can "write" to a lot.

(This has to be one of the most perverted ads on BYOND -_- )

Anyone got suggestions?
DON'T use flash media, including most/all SD cards, as a replacement for a real harddrive unless the OS is specially designed to run an OS. Flash has a very limited max write count. So it works great for storing documents, things like pagefiles will kill it fast. According to one report, putting the Windows pagefile on flash media will cause it to die in hours.

Now SSD are different, they are made to withstand the rewrite stress. There are, however, 8GB SD cards, I believe. Plenty enough for all your documents.

Well, from what I hear EeeXubuntu is made specifically for the EeePC, and all of the /log and paging and indexing has been turned off. Wouldn't it be safe for a SD card?

I see no reason at all to put the OS on a SD card and the media on the SSD. SSD's are built to last, to withstand tons of writes, and to be reliable. Why not put the OS on the SSD card, then, and put your media on the SD card?

Ok then, what about for Document storage? What's the fastest SD card on the market?

"EMCABBHBF" Put that in when you throw the Eee PC (Black $299 model) into your cart. There are different codes for the different colors, if you wanted another one, but only the $299 model.

I want the white one (for 299). Black one gets too many smudges visible.

Would it be worth getting the 399 or the 499 model?
I think not.
I'm probably only going to use it for college and traveling, I have another laptop that's more of a desktop replacement.

EMCABBHBK For the white.

Looks like the only difference is storage capacity, and maybe processor speed(didn't look at it). If it is just storage, then you should just buy a 16GB SD card for $65 rather than spend $100 for 2GB. (EMCABBHCD{Also with free shipping})

Heh, this week's Newegg news letter had some pretty sweet deals for you.

Oh no.
I may not buy it this week though. :(
Those things expire by the end of the week?

I could just install EeeXubuntu or XP on the SDHC card right?

That's next Wednesday. So you have a little time, but not a lot. But it's just free shipping on the Eee, so the price isn't going to be too much higher (probably around $10-$15 for shipping). The card is $10 off and free shipping, so it's a pretty good deal.

NOT XP. XP would kill it in no time. EeeXubuntu could work if it has been tweaked to, but remember, even Firefox can eat a flash memory if it is configured to store history and whatnot.

It's best to not run programs on flash based devices because they will probably assume they are on a harddrive. Portable Firefox works because it has most of the writing functions disabled.

Hmm..
I'm going to have to look into EeeXubuntu more to see if it has all of that kind of stuff.

Do you have an EeePC Danial?
In response to Flame Sage
No, I'd love to get one, but I just don't have a use for it. I own a decent Acer laptop, a modded DS, and a nice cell phone. Between the three I have most of my mobile needs met. I think if I'm going to get anything, it will probably be a new smart phone or an Internet tablet (those are looking really nice these days).
