First and foremost, I am not going to go on a nubish rant these are my valid complaints about 4.0. To start off I'd like to thank the BYOND staff on putting in the time to make an update like 4.0, which is a nice achievement in the MMOG gaming world. Now, for my complaints. 1) 4.0 is far from user friendly, for example a minor 4.0 problem like the window not fitting on the screen can lead a normal user into a headache because he/she does not know how to edit the default skin. 2) Lack of in depth 4.0 tutorials, most of which can confuse users and cause people to stray away from creating skins. 3) Not being able to edit icons bigger than 32x32! This is one of the problems in which I have been pissed at. I mean what the heck is the point of importing them and not being able to edit, that plainly grinds my gears( Yes, I know family Guy reference). |

For the icon thing, what is the point of having that feature then. It's useless.

4.0 is nice, but the Interface system needs a good in depth tutorial to show people how to use it, otherwise we all just look like idiots playing with a big toy we don't understand :/

These are all things that will be fixed it time. It takes people time to get familiar with all the new features, and for people to write documentation. Lummox JR has already said that he's working on that, but between that, programming BYOND, keeping up the Dungeon Crawlers guild, reprogramming Incursion, and possibly having a life, it might take a little time. Be patient. 3) Not being able to edit icons bigger than 32x32! This is one of the problems in which I have been pissed at. You can edit them in external image editors like Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro or GIMP. They're basically PNGs with comments that turn them into DMIs. As long as the image editor preserves the comments, it'll work just fine. |

You just hammer at it until you make things work the way you want - and if you can't, then you post on the forums until someone who knows answers. Then you continue hammering at it some more until you understand it. |

I liked 4.0 from the get go but found it hard despite going through the reference and readin all the stuff available. Try doing it once again..I was frustrated and I finally got a understanding of it today; and I realized its so simple! You might hit yourself on the head too once you get it; but keep at it. Not much documentation is neccessary besides what's already up..

I'm not sure how the default skin fits in here in the context of a sizing problem. But there's obviously going to be a learning curve. Good skins take time to develop. Our closed beta testers are really only getting good at it now, and we're still changing all kinds of stuff up on them. 2) Lack of in depth 4.0 tutorials, most of which can confuse users and cause people to stray away from creating skins. The 4.0 tutorials are a series being published on Dream Makers. They were never intended to go up all at once. Lesson 2 will go up this week. Lummox JR |

I like BYOND V4.0 as well, but I also find it frustrating at the same time! I love the new features that are available to us on BYOND, and it certainly is going to be a time saver in the end with some for these features.
I find it frustrating because of the new interface editor. I see the great potential of it and it does excite me, but at the same time, it can have a slight learning curve. Not only that, but then there is the developer aspect of it. Now not only do I need to worry about the way my game looks and plays, but now how my interface looks, how it functions and how well it will work with the majority of the players. It is another thing for me to worry about. |

What's so hard with using paint? I don't find being able to places stuff bigger than 32x32 on the map all at once useless.

This is easily one of the greatest improvements,so I can't understand how people can complain, becuase they're too lazy to use am external art program, and iport, besides It's better to need to use an external art program to edit, since you can do alot more with those art programs, then the one that comes with DM. Hell, before 4.0 I always made the icons outside of DM, plus I needed to resize the icons. OMG, I can finally have larger icons without making 15 obj to form one icon, and I don't need to waste a page of code for coordinates. PS. Lol you have no idea how much space that saves, since I'm making a MTG game. The first public version is gonna have 400 cards, which comes to 800 icons(becuase I need to make two sizes for each card, one for the field, and another for the hand/deck editing utility), and that doesn't include table/misc icons. |
Yeah. OpenGL is a pain in the ass too.
Its only been a week, let things die down and people will get working on that sort of stuff. I remember a guide somewhere for skins, too.
Hmm.. if you think about it, with the current interface of the icon editor, it'll be hard to fit a zoomed in 64x64 icon, let alone something bigger. I'm not taking the fact that scrollbars could be implented. (Or even better, Photoshop's thumbnail scrolling)
