Hub cleaning
I was thinking... To clean the hub, maybe entries that were not changed/used for X(three months?) amount of time could be deleted(or at least hidden until the creator does something with them)? This could repeat itself and so only used entries will be kept. I'm sick and tired of seeing hundreds of unused hub entries when I'm searching something...

Forum Advanced Search addon
I'd like to see the option to search for only thread starters(first post), and not the replies.

edit: Fixed spellings!
You should also be able to search topic titles only.

That's what I said. :P

Thread starter as in the first post.

I like the sound of your ideas Divine.

What would your Hub Cleaning rules be just games?

...Yeah, you did mention 'thread starter', but er, thats NOT what I said. =P haha, comeback!

All in all, you should be able to search:

--Topic titles only what I suggested.

--Find topics created by someone. Like the current 'author:' field, but that includes topics only rather than including all posts (replies).

--Search only topics' first post(s).what you suggested
Your suggestion doesn't really sound useful to me, tho. >.>

I'm pretty sure that libraries like hub://Spuzzum.s_admin will be deleted, since they won't be used for more than three months, even though such as good libraries. Same goes for games.

Thanks. =)

I don't think there'll be a need currently to do this with libraries/demos, but if there is a need they could do it with every unofficial(not in the demos/libraries channel) ones. (note: that's for you too, AD!)

You copied that from me >_<

... Thread starters, as in all of the above. :P

Sorry, I guess that wasn't very clear. In other forums I visit, people use the term 'thread starters' to refer to a few things:

  • The person who started the thread
  • The post which started the thread(aka the first)
  • Posts which changed the topic discussed on the replies after them(no need to include this one, though!)

Your suggestion doesn't really sound useful to me, tho. >.>

Oh, but it is! It is a method of being more strict about your search results, meaning it'll be easier to search.

I'm personally against this one. Three months is way too short. There are some good games out there left behind by people who no longer frequent Byond, and I think to indiscriminately remove them would be a mistake.

If you're tired of seeing them in searches, perhaps a "Search recent/active entries only" option could be added in its place?

Couldn't we just add some filters or a sorting option?
ie. -games newer than 3 months / 6 months / year, etc.
-games by people still members
-games by people who've logged in 3/6 months
-games out of alpha
etc.

(also for TMDI)

I did think about that option, but it isn't only for more convenient searching, but also to make things easier for the server. Think about it, if he had 100k hub entries, 25k unused, the server will barely work with the massive amount of hub entries. With 75k, it won't be such a big deal. Of course, I don't know. I thought this may work better for the staff, but if there won't be any problems with the server, then a filter might be even better!

s_admin, in my opinion, isn't actually a good library. Useful, maybe, but it's contrary to a lot of the accepted standards these days. =)

Once I get a good muse, I'll produce and release jt_admin to replace it. It'll be a bit harder for the newbie to use, but I'm intending to also produce "modules" which provide "hooks" into the core functionality of the library. So you could download the browser-based module, the verbs-based module, the set-first-player-as-admin module, etc.

Many of the older libraries do need to be cleaned up, and the presence of an automatic suppression would work wonders. Some libraries don't need to be cleaned up, however, and we would lose a good thing if those disappeared.

Perhaps we could just have the best of both worlds: entries that haven't been used within three months get "archived" but are still available for searching if you click a checkbox in the advanced search. Alternately, they would always appear in the search results, but would be sorted last.

We do plan to do a hub cleanup shortly, and will probably use some algorithms to help us find entries that are no longer relevant.

Woah. This is news.

Please be careful not to kill useful hub entries, that's all I'm saying. =)

That would explain why searching for certain games doesn't work for me at the moment...

Make sure you have the "Search everything" box checked. Otherwise, empty and/or old hub entries won't show up in the search list.

I like that idea alot. I'm not sure deleting (probably a huge amount of the hub) is a good idea. However, if it is your preference to ignore old entires, then you could set it to sort out old entires. It works out for both sides.

I don't know what kind of strain hub entries put on the server, but they have an option to hide them from the hub index. Instead of automatically deleting an entry, that option could be automatically selected. That way, active developers can remove the option, fans with an old link still have access, and searches get to be uncluttered.

Wouldn't it be easy since all demo/libraries and such are in developer.byond and games on games.byond? Or are they all mixed within a huge list you guys have?

That's a good idea. When I search on games.byond.com I see only games, but when I search on developer.byond.com I see games and demos/libraries/...

I think it should be split up even more, with possibly the introduction of hub.byond.com which would serve ALL hub-related searches.
