Wow. That is cool. Just wondering, is your phone bill charged at all when you receive a call? I don't know anything about phones, and am wondering if calling myself with this charges me anything in anyway.

Well, that will depend on your phone plan. for example if you call a cell phone, they almost always charge incoming. while most land-line phones do not. |

That sucks. I don't get charged when people call me (nor do I use up pre-paid minutes). In Australia, the caller pays the bill. As they should; why should somebody be able to cost me money just by ringing me up?
And Americans say that having an internet download limit is a sign of living in a "second world country" (direct quote from SSGX)... =P |
Well, I have 400 daytime minutes and unlimited nights and weekends. For under $35USD a month, whachugot? Also, my landline could be unlimited local and longdistance for anywhere in the states for under $45USD if my mom would just switch... but she is afraid of the phone spiders or something.
|
Wow. I'd rather have download limits than get charged for people calling me.
That's got to be, the height of stupidity. |
Does Crispy not get charged for downloading AND uploading? Somebody could ping him to death and make him go over his limit. Also, either way, you are using the phone companys resources. In most cases, you are paying a different company than the person calling you is, so it is a way for cell phone companys to make money nomatter which way the call goes. Think about someone who always gets called, and never calls anyone. The phone companys wouldn't make money off them, but they would still be giving them services(At least in prepay, where you could buy 100 minutes and never use them)
|
Some ISPs charge uploads as downloads. But most don't now days.
Here, when you buy prepaid credit, you get it in money. Not minutes. Most telco's give you special things, like 300 free minutes when calling another person with the same network. Or TurboCharge, giving you $120 call credit. For $30. |
Well, as long as I call someone inside of my network(Sprint) and in the states, it is free. My mom and my brother use Sprint, which accounts for about half of my talk time, so it doesn't cost me any minutes. One thing that does irk me, I think it costs me to receive text messages, even though I can't control if they are being sent to me. It is only a few cents per message, but I don't use them and don't want them, but sometimes my brother or friends text message me, then I call them back an actually(Crazy as this might sound), use a cellphone(phone means voice) for voice communication[insert gasp here].
|
So, you're charged to receive text messages? That is insane.
Sure, you're using their services. But I still find that unreasonable. |
Well, they are far cheaper than most competitors around here, and the only downside I have found is a few cent charge for text messages recived, which are rare. No so much unreasonable as silly.

cell phones altogether are pretty unreasonable.
Now skype? Free calls anywhere in the US and canada is pretty good:) Skypein costs what, 4usd / mo? You can have a phone for 4usd a month with unlimited long distance to anywhere in the US. Much better than 40usd/mo for a traditional phone, imo;) |
I've never heard of any USA ISP having "download limits" or whatnot. I've hosted a Bittorrent Tracker server off my home DSL for a few months (in the past!), and they never said anything. I've also downloaded large amounts of files without any complaints from them. I just pay my $30 (or whatever it is now) each month and happily play online!
Is that what you meant, or are you describing a different kind of limit? Also, the way the cell phones in my area work are as follows: You pay monthly (or quarterly, bi-annually, etc) for a monthly set of "minutes." When talking on your cell phone, every minute takes away from your monthly "minutes." If you go over your minutes, you usually get disconnected or get surplus charges on your bill. Some times minutes are free: For instance, some plans (like mine!) give you "Free Weekend and Evenings" to talk on. Also, on my network, I believe if you call another cell phone on the same network (Verizon to Verizon) it's free (no minutes used) Also, for my plan, extra features, like text messaging, cost extra. You either pay a monthly fee for a set amount each month, or they charge you 10-cents each time you get or send a text message. Costly boogers ~Kujila |
I dont think you got me. I dont live in the US or Canada, and neither does the majority of the worlds population.
