Just curious, I need to know! I can't wait for the changes!

You mean the end of 2006? Certainly! But I am aiming for sometime in the next few months. We have made considerable progress but are now on a hiatus while we resolve some other issues.

But I am aiming for sometime in the next few months

That deserves a few exlamation marks.

Here they are: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The NEXT FEW MONTHS! Spiffiness. And hopefully, my parents will listen to the suggestion of a BYOND membership for christmas.

Wait...hiatus? What happened, did a moth fly into the vacuum tube?
In response to Arcanedragon_2004
That's a little harsh.
In response to Jp
Maybe you guys still run those messed up old...ENIAC computers that run on vacuums and a moth flew in there, thus screwing up the computer while Dan went in and retrieved it, but Nadrew *accidently* (note operative word *accidently*) turned on the power and electrocuted Dan, and thus they had to put him in a computer, and his body in a bloody sack in Nadrew's basement.

I wasn't trying to be harsh, I respect the BYOND system and I am awaiting it's next big update when it hits 4.0, but right now I find the system extremly wanting in various elements promgramming-wise. I was, however, trying to make a little joke. Please forgive me for any misunderstandings.

What elements? BYOND has problems with printing graphics directly on the map, and it's slow. The lack of client side processing is also annoying.

Beyond that, there aren't any problems I can see. And when the switch to OpenGL finally happens, drawing on the map will almost have to be easier, and the client will also be much faster.
In response to Jp
If OpenGL is supported, than support some Direct3D, but I do wonder when the change from 2d to 3d will take place.
In response to Lou
I don't think BYOND will ever switch from 2D to 3D...

Perhaps some rudimentary 3D support will be added at some point, but I don't think BYOND would/should ever lose its 2D roots...
In response to Lou
Nothing regarding OpenGL or the like is confirmed. Note that it won't actually be 3D if/when it actually happens; it will merely be using a 3D display method to display 2D graphics. (It's faster that way, and you can even hardware-accelerate it if the appropriate hardware is installed.)

I doubt Direct3D will ever happen, though. It's not cross-platform, whereas OpenGL is. If OpenGL drawing ever gets implemented, that will ease future porting to Linux/MacOS/etc.

Besides, OpenGL can do everything that Direct3D can do! The only reason it's not in as-widespread use these days is because of Microsoft's anti-OpenGL tactics. (For example, Windows only directly supports OpenGL 1.1, which is OLD. Newer features can be enabled, but only through OpenGL extensions.)

The OpenGL shift isn't for 3D - it's so that BYOND can run faster and so that Linux and Macintosh BYOND can have a graphical interface.
In response to Jp
yea i get that, but the 3d thing was another hopeful suggestion to get some promise that will never come true... sniffle
In response to Tom
very nice to hear from Tom for a change! :) Thanks Tom, I will make note of it and immediately start working on an old project of mine. I needed that client side ability in the next version so I can make pathfinding and such and not have it be so laggy... :P

Of course OpenDL isn't supported by Windows. Why would Microsoft openly support something when they have their own copy, even if it is worse? Personally, DirectX and Direct3D are terrible and I mostly wouldn't use them if they didn't have to be.
In response to Jp
Haha, being a member isnt all that wonderful, I'm just a member because I'm helping support the team that works on BYOND! If I knew how to donate more, I would.
In response to Polantaris
Pretend that you're buying a membership but don't put in a key. This'll allow you to donate extra without buying a membership. Or just extend your own.
In response to DeathAwaitsU
Oh okay, thanks.
In response to Jon Snow
Client-side processing in BYOND 4.0? Um. Unless I'm sorely mistaken (and I hope but severely doubt that I am), that won't be happening.
In response to Polantaris
Yeah, but it's not that passive. The impression I get is that Microsoft is actively planning to make OpenGL suck on Windows - meaning that Direct3D will be the only reasonable alternative. See, for example, the Vista debacle: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Opengl#Future_in_Microsoft_Windows

Currently you can use OpenGL in Windows just fine if you're willing to jump through a few hoops to enable extensions and the like. But according to that article, Vista will only support OpenGL 1.4 without extension support, and even then with severely degraded performance. That's not a technical problem, that's an anti-competitive corporate policy.
