"Myth: The United States lost the war in Vietnam.
The American military was not defeated in Vietnam. The American military did not lose a battle of any consequence. From a military standpoint, it was almost an unprecedented performance. (Westmoreland quoting Douglas Pike, a professor at the University of California, Berkley a renowned expert on the Vietnam War) [Westmoreland] This included Tet 68, which was a major military defeat for the VC and NVA."
I would also like to point to this site http://www.rjsmith.com/kia_tbl.html, so that you can see the giant difference between VNC casualties and US's. We killed at an amazing rate. The ratio for killing for US to VC/NVA casualties is 47,378 (roughly 10,000 of which were killed by non hostile accidents) to 1,100,000. Running this through a calculator gives us for every one KIA US soldier, there are 23.21752712229305 KIA VC/NVA soldiers. Surely, from a military standpoint, we kicked their ass. If I were Vietnam, I would think 23 times, before I ever, ever, thought of fighting the US. But then again, when you have a confused nation and unloyal celbrities and media, all galavanting around creating as much unrest in your home country as possible, it makes it rather difficult to finish a war. In my opininion, there was a greater good to be found by finishing that war, but the American Press could not see it, and a government that was too afraid and too nieve to deal with them truthfully and forcefully, did not help either.
Shouldn't we be fighting agaisnt russia or cuba or something instead of Britain and America fighting..

Why did you post under mine? My post was a reply to a post above it. It was not against any british people. People shouldn't be biased against eachother based on where they're from.

There are many other reasons why foreigners percieve Americans in a bad light. Everything from movies to politics to propaganda to holy Jihaad via Usama Bin Laden. Whoever's got the most money in the world must be the one to blame for not sharing it with everyone else...This same formulaic BS(figure this aconym out for yourself) is the same logic used in Hitlers Book, Mein Kampf , when he blamed the Jews for Germany's economic problems. Of course, he obfuscates the issue a little more than that, but when a people are desperate for the end all answer (not too unlike newbies quest for the code on BYOND), they are willing to believe anything. And that's just what you get when you see avid hatred from Syria and Iran and other mixed up and confused countries. This is especially true in a country that controls its media (see China for example on how to control a country's information about the free world).
To blanketly assume that the reason other nations don't get along with Americans is because there are rude Americans, is about as wise as assuming the only reason planes crash is because of mountains. While mountains do indeed cause planes to crash, they are far from being the only reason. Any super power who maintains opposing and/or threatening beliefs to another super power or power, will inevitably be subject to the scorn/ridicule/hatred of other nations who share a common fear/mistrust/jealously for the afore mentioned super power. |
I seriously don't see any "prejudice against the british". You are our closest ally and have helped us many times, and I certainly don't see much of it around here, there are a lot of people from other countries on BYOND, and I really don't see much prejudice against them.
Digi is from Germany (if I'm not mistaken) and I don't see him getting "Nazi!!! NAZZZII!!!" all the time. if you are talking about general "US oppinion", don't even listen to that BS. Remember that the majority of americans are ignorant, selfish idiots... But wait, that's the same for most countries, including yours. Almost all people who actually know anything about the british respect you. It's things like the media and Ol' Racist Grandpa Ned that screw them up, just like in your country. |
While I don't like the whole 'superpower' thing, Vietnam is a horrible excuse. It's not like America fought it's hardest there and still lost there.
Oh, and I always use the same argument Holy did just here. They kinda made the language, granting them rights over what's correct and incorrect, as far as I'm concerned. I'll still use what I'm used to, but they 'they do it incorrectly' crap is annoying. |
War isn't just killing people, you know. It's forcing the other side to our terms, and we have to use strategy to do that, in which isn't just killing people. There would be no killing people if there was no goal.
If we WON vietnam, south vietnam would have the entire country right now... But wait, they don't. The north, communists, have the entire country now. But wait... Vietnam was never a war (if I'm not mistaken)! it was a police action, it was us trying to help the south defeat the communist terrorists formally known as "The Viet-cong". Whatever, though. It was just like a war just not "officially" a war, so it's better just to consider it a war. Want to know WHY we lost vietnam? Because we lost the war with "staying in the country" with the voters in the US, not because we had more people killed on our side. We kicked the crap out of vietnam (luckely pulling out before we were horribly exposed to Agent Orange), however, the idiots in the field decided to let the media film the war. And guess what gets sent back the the US for the people to see? Not soldiers saving south vietnam, but soldiers burning villages with small children in them, and a commander shooting a man in the head and you watch as fountains of blood shoot from the mans head (keep in mind that people in US think this man was just a POW, but actually the man had killed that commander's entire family and deserved what he got comming to him). US oppinion turned into that the US was being barbaric and should pull out immediately. You lose popular oppinion, you lose the war. Sadam tried this against us. He had a film given out that showed a women standing atop her bombed house saying that the US did it and the US liked to kill innocents and they just want to take over. It was later found out that the woman was a high ranking Baath party member and it was all a hoax to destroy the US oppinion that killed us in vietnam. |

It's not like America fought it's hardest there and still lost there. But that's half the point. America can't use it's whole strength even when it's at war and loosing (or not winning). They have to pass a bill just to dig a latrine. Then when they do the news spins it and the public suddenly thinks it's wrong and they should pull their forces out. |

Don't take it personal. We do it to Canadians too. And Mexicans. Nobody knows why. It's just American culture to have fun at someone else's expense. :)

The general American public is that of stupidity. We go to war to stop some major threat (such as Saddam), and what are the people saying?
Oh no, my son who entered the military knowing that he would likely be sent off if we went to war is going to a new country! He will be in danger! *Apparently doesn't even think about the relationships between war/military/danger* We NEED to bring our soldiers back to safety rather than have them be soldiers, because Saddam and the terrorists surely have learned their lesson and will be good from now on. That's my opinion, anyway. Hiead |
I dont see any major threat in being in a country that dosent want us that, were the only thing we are doing, is wasting money and killing our troops.
The War on Iraq is a waste of time, and finally people are starting to relise it. About Saddam, as far as the news and media are concerned, there was no direct connection between Saddam and the terroists at hand, that attacked the twin towers to begin with. Some may argue that he was a dictator and that he was abusing his people, but that would be his own buisness, not ours. We are not permoting freedom, we are forcing it on people, which is just as bad. You'll never be able to end terrorism, there will always be someone out there, that has it off worse then someone else, or hates someone else's ideals and will attack them. That dosent mean we should go out and start attcking people, that, for the most part, had no real hand in terrorism. Saddam isnt a mayjor threat to us, George W. Bush is. |

Hell yeah. Why don't people stop being such pansies?
