I have a questiong. is there some guy who's key is Eterna he said that he's part of the staff...
he came to my game and started talking thrash that he's looking at the source code. He said that he's a BYOND mod. and that he got a 'job'from Dantom. He said that he couldn't tell something.. I didn't believe him so I muted..

I am still wondering if he's really staff(because for some reason that key comes familiar to me)

I WaS SO STUPID TO BELIEVE IT! GRRR he named his key Lummox JX in stead of JR.

Can someone take care of him. (ungh, I'm so ashamed that I actually fell for it *hits his head with <s>a rock</s> two rocks*)

I should've known.. I feel very stupid but can someone take care of him?

Yeah, I actually feel for that at first and thought there was something seriously wrong going on.
I think Lummox would definately want to take care of this one seeing as how he is being impersonated.
I'd give you the link to the support form, but I can never find it. I wish they would keep a link to it in the index or something....

Aye, you really flunked the duh test on this one. Let's review where this was obvious:

  • Someone acting like a jerk gets in your face and then claims to be a BYOND admin. Right off the bat you should have seen a red flag. Although everyone has their off days, there's an enormous gulf of difference between a BYOND Staff member and a common troll, as this clearly was.
  • This Eterna character hasn't exactly been real active on the forums or helping people out, has he?
  • As you have now noticed, X and R are not the same letter.
  • This impostor twit couldn't even spell, let alone bother to capitalize or punctuate most of what he said. He couldn't spell "what", called you a punk right off the bat for no reason, and thought "all right" was one word. Since you've seen quite a few of my posts on the forums, the difference in presentation should have been quite striking, even if you didn't pick up on the specifics.

    When someone tries to bully you with admin status like that, and it's not someone you know is an admin such as Deadron or Mike H for example, your BS detector should start going off at a pretty high pitch. At that point then you look for other things that don't add up, like the fact that this guy is a nobody or his story is being corroborated by a fake key or that he has the communication skills of a preschooler.

    I know you're already kicking yourself, but you really need to think these things through before trusting a troll next time. The same goes of course for anyone who reads this thread.

If the BYOND staff starts disrupting your game, chances are they aren't BYOND staff. Even if they are, you have every right to remove them from your game without worrying about a BYOND ban or anything like that.

Chances are extremely high, at that.

Indeed. If you don't want someone in your game, you can mute or expel them as you wish, and the BYOND Staff have no right to interfere with that even when it comes to themselves.

I know ,it was pretty stupid of me. I should've noticed from the beginning that it wasn't him.
when he first came on I did look at his forum posts,and hub. he didn't had any. There is were is were I started not to trust him. I asked him prove, he didn't reply to that.
Then he started to talk trash. I had enough so I muted. then he left (and he was probarly creating that key in the time he was gone). then he got back with the fake key and called me punk, from there on I should've know and banned him directly.
It was very stupid of me to trust him that fast.

1. They (BYOND Mods) CANNOT look at your source code.
2. Someone running around games saying their a mod will most likely not be a mod.
3. Check their key in games.byond.com/people/[key], if their key isn't at least forged in '01 then it's not a mod.
4. I believe if a mod ever came to your game, it'd be to contact you about something you did wrong (or right), but they will most likely use the pager.
5. Report the people who impersonate, and tell them that 'Lummox JR' is gonna come poop in their face. Works every time.

Edit: I just read YMI's post, and yeah, you can do anything you want to BYOND staff in your game (well, don't try to format their C:\ drive). Your game is private, and is yours. BYOND Staff cannot moderate your game (that's unless you ask them to (but you'd have to give them the commands)). So if you ever see a 'Lummox' drop by again, don't hesitate to mute or ban 'em, even if it is Lummox JR ;-).

Speaking of a log, I should make a library on moderating your game even when you're not there! (That includes eating up the administrators in your game) Thanks for the suggestion. :-)

Well, if you keep up you'll know their 'first key'. AirMapster, AbyssDragon, LexyBitch (not in order). But I also guess that if you know their alternative keys, you should know enough not to fall into the hands of evil impersonators. So I guess #3 is off.

Think of it this way: Who would actually come running to me if they got banned from a game and wanted in? Most trolls know better than to try that; I side with the host every time. There are bad hosts, but it's their right to say who can and cannot join their server.

Knowing I wouldn't stick my neck out for a troll in that circumstance, why would I do so for a BYOND admin, who ought to know better 100 times over? Heck, why would they even need me?

Indeed. I like to beat up on trolls, so feel free to hold me over the head of anyone who tries to pull that impersonation crap.

Not to mention Lummox doesn't make that many typos. Along with the fact that BYOND staff doesn't get involved with problems in games.

What if someone got a key similar to an admin's key but didn't actually pretend to be like the actual mod at all. Would this still be impersonation?
