I'm just wondering, (and if this is too off-topic, feel free to delete) is it possible to get a .com address without buying one? Like, could I use apache or something? I guess I could always use .tk, but that won't go to an IP address, and .com's seem more professional... Anyway, how do you get a .com, without paying?
You don't...it stinks, doesn't it...
Best you could probably do is get a dyndns.com account, but thats not exactly too good.
Most .coms are cheap now, Maztekia.com was about £15 ($10) for a year.
Well, I bought a *.com registrar, and it makes you as free as possile, depending on your host. I have an everything plan o.O (meh dad hosts it 'cause he owns a local ISP)

Oh yeah, and my earl (URL) is:

tried to tell you...-shrugs- atleast you dont have some kind of angelfire link or geocities?...i actually like the cute little ip addressed sites ^^;...but anyway....cjb.net is horrible now...they are sell outs...dot.tk is the only one i would actually even consider using, rather then host my own dns somehow....-wonders off-
I don't know of any free Domain Name companies, but I do know of a few cheap one, chargin around 8-12 dollars yearly.

As I recall, http://www.v3.com/ has a fairly good deal going on,...

Ok, I'm looking into this again, and I have two questions:

1) I want a .com, probably for a year or two, what's the cheapest place to get one?

2) How do the registry sites get their .coms?

1) Cheapeast I've found is www.godaddy.com that's where I got mine.

2) Who knows? :-P I have no idea.

They either host their own DNS servers or have a deal with someone who does. I'm not sure of the process needed to get recognized as a .com registrar, but this website may have more info: http://www.icann.org/

After looking around their site a bit, I found this: http://www.icann.org/registrars/accreditation.htm
