Um... if a game isn't supposed to have an under construction feel when it is under construction, then when should it? It's allowed to feel under contruction, it's just that it still will after it's finished. And if the fact that it is under construction isn't the cause of it feeling that way... then what is? The way everything seems to be "temporary". The lack of capitalization on lots of verbs/stats makes it feel like they are just place holders. As for the interface, the 2.0 engine (which it will be a long time before anyone sees) has more of an "interface" than the first one does, but I'm still using src-ed verbs and panels (with mouse options for many simple actions) and I'm still using stat panels. No, it's usually "unprofessional" because they don't suit the game or they aren't used like a slick and professional system. It's like a BMW, the BMW name is pure class, but if it's old and covered in rust that class fades away. As for the graphics... they're inconsistent because they were pulled from many sources, yes, and will probably remain that way until the rest of the game is not "Under Construction". In the mean time, if you want graphics... go play Counter-Strike. :P That's fair enough, I was more having a go at the people who jump up in the graphics defence as if I was claiming Secret of Mana 2 used edited RPG Maker 95 graphics. That isn't too say the graphics are on the same level as stickmen, they just don't work together very well. |

The thing is is that its better all the way around, CS sucks compared ^^; (And DOD was made by vavle, so don't say CS is better, because it isn't.) |
So what you're saying is that your game will have millions of classes as well as player/class combinations? Thousands of items? A map so big that it takes you hours in real life to walk accross it? A game so in depth that every single plant (and there are hundreds of thousnads of them) is hand placed and each culture has a thourough background? So this game has numerous full length novels that add to the richness and complexity of the game? That it has complex wether cycles as well as complex day/night astrology stuff interwoven into the game? That this game took 3 years and millions of dollars to make.
Wow! That must have been pretty hard to do using the dream maker! |

He's saying it would be the Morrowind of BYOND, not that it would be equal to Morrowind. Meaning that Seika will be the best RPG on BYOND, like Morrowind is the best RPG on the market.
I've never played Morrowind, but I assume that the person that started this thread thinks highly of Morrowind. |

Capitalization is a consistent design choice. I'd like you to read these two sentences, both of which have been rendered in multiple ways, and tell me which ones are most "professional":
A) "This is but a sword, but Arthur bears Excalibur." B) "This is but a Sword, but Arthur bears Excalibur." C) "This is but a sword, but arthur bears excalibur." and A) "I am quite skilled in both French and geology, but my swordplay is hardly equal to my German." B) "I am quite skilled in both French and Geology, but my Swordplay is hardly equal to my German." C) "I am quite skilled in both french and geology, but my swordplay is hardly equal to my german." I'm sorry that the use of proper English in capitalizing items and skills makes things look like placeholders to you! Textbooks and dictionaries must seem shockingly transitory to you. I'm not surprised that my attempt at maintaining some sort of standard came across as "sloppy" to the eyes of the average gamer. Deeply, deeply worried about the future of the world, but not surprised. Now for the matter of verbs and commands... I never capitalize them. That's entirely internally consistent throughout all of my projects, and given that no one way or the other is more "proper", consistency is the hallmark of professionalism. Given that most of the nouns in the world are common nouns, they look better in the command line, and it fits more with the look, feel, and mindset of a MUD player who's used to inputing commands by typing them (coincidentally, this is how I input most of my commands.) The actual "Attributes" are capitalized because they're a major concept... within the framework of the game, they are proper nouns. HP, MP, and EP are capitalized because that's a common convention with such abbreviations. On the plus side, you've inspired a great new feature for HRH 2... rather than enforcing proper capitalization of player names, characters with uncapitalized names will be declared temporary placeholders and won't be saved. [EDIT] And just so we're utterly, transparently clear... I really don't care what you say about the graphics. I'm not defending the graphics in any way. It's entirely possible none of my games will ever have good graphics because when I look at a game, I don't see the graphics anyway. It's like asking a blind person to paint a picture. On the same note, I'm not objecting to your questioning my position (or my game's) on this or any other list... really, Hedgerow Hall is so totally overblown... at it's best period, it was 75% potential and 25% game. |

No offence intended, but it comes off as being consistantly lazy. Like it doesn't follow any sort of format (since you do use capitals in other statpanels).
With verbs it may look better on the command line, but in the panels it makes it hard to tell where one command starts and the other stops. Combined with the "jumpyness" of using set src, it comes off as being half-assed. I think that is more a statpanel thing though. Anyway, I know better then to try and get you to change your mind on a subject like this (one that you've already put thought into and decided how you want to go). On another note, have you ever put any thought towards getting rid of the statpanels and making it all command line/right click? I think HrH could actually pull something like that off. Hedgemistress wrote: On the plus side, you've inspired a great new feature for HRH 2... rather than enforcing proper capitalization of player names, characters with uncapitalized names will be declared temporary placeholders and won't be saved. Yea. Each update is a decent step up from the last, and Most of them are either new features that haven't been seen on BYOND, or are rare ones not used...The environment is overall friendly, the Gm's aren't rude, and there is extended information on the website to help beginners.
So far the only thing really needed is the storyline's improvement to wrap the players into it more. Aaiko has clearly stated a few times allready to us players that he is constantly working on the details for the storyline. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, and critisizm is good for any game to improve; Just to let you guys know Aaiko is a good person and coder as well, Dont be so quick to do all these pointless one sentenced Posts about something that could be discovered by pushing the button on the hub to goto the game's Hub page. ugh. |

No offence intended, but it comes off as being consistantly lazy. Like it doesn't follow any sort of format (since you do use capitals in other statpanels). It does follow a format that I just explained: standard English. Proper nouns are capitalized. Common ones aren't. I notice you capitalize the first letter of the first word of every sentence, so I'm honestly disappointed that this isn't immediately apparent. It's not even a change from stat panel to statpanel... you might notice, looking at inventory or skill list, that within the same statpanel, some words are capitalized and others aren't. It only looks "lazy" if your mind expects "French" and "geology" or ("Shrevish" and "brewing", as the case may be) to both be capitalized the same way. Lazy would be not capitalizing anything, or not capitalizing everything and not bothering to change where appropriate. It takes extra effort to stop and ask, "Is this capitalization appropriate?"... or it would, except I do it out of habit. On another note, have you ever put any thought towards getting rid of the statpanels and making it all command line/right click? I think HrH could actually pull something like that off. Actually, I have thought strongly about it... the command panel seems ungainly to me because, unlike command line and context menus, there's no natural/logical way to specify an immediate argument. The only reason I haven't yet is because I'm bad at documenting things and I want people to know what commands are available. [EDIT] And furthermore, I pledge to you 100% of the money I make from deleting characters with uncapitalized names. |

Why not just auto-capitalize it? I've made a funky proc that does just that (and more)! Just e-mail me @ [email protected] and I'll send you it. Or send it to anyone else, for that matter.

That's not the issue Hazman... the issue is whether or not to capitalise, not how to do it. =) And why not just post the proc on the forums?

PS: I'll drop the subject since it isn't going anywhere, but what I meant was that it didn't seem to follow a format, reguardless of if it did or not. Sort of like how DM looks like a completely random bunch of words if you only see a short snipplet. Also, when I see "Geology:" and "geology:" written in a statpanel "Geology:" looks right. Just because I'm used to if it's the first word it gets a capital. The H-ster later wrote: The only reason I haven't yet is because I'm bad at documenting things and I want people to know what commands are available. That actually really surprizes me. Agree with you or not you usually manage to get across exactly what you were trying to tell me (and I am a pretty difficult guy to get a point across to). Why not make a "commands" verb, which lists the current verbs a player has. Then make a "description <command>" verb that brings up the description of the <command> verb. If I remember right you currently use desc vars on your verbs so it wouldn't be too hard too modify it. |
The only thing with this game is that it plays out kind of slow. Not only in gameplay itself, but the delay for movement is a bit annoying. Chalk it up to tick lag I assume.

I agree (I decided i had enough time to play it, got to level 16.), Everyone says there is a story line ..but besides the beginning story that you can read there is no plot or story line in the game at all.

Fact: If BYOND didn't have the panel function built in, and someone created a game that had it, it would be heralded as being extremely slick and professional by the same people who currently deride it as being unprofessional. It's only "unprofessional" to you because it's built in and resists customization.
