Hm...is it possible that you can encode graphics to...wait. nvm lol. I was going to say there could be a way to encode graphics so you couldn't screenshot them...but then again, taking a literal picture of the graphics is completely different than Ripping the file...encoding would work for file stealers...not the pixels themselves,...Rats i thought i was on to something lol

If it can be seen it can be taken. Disabling keys won't do anything but make it so the person wanting to grab a screenshot will just have to use a program instead. And besides nothing annoys me more than a program playing with OS stuff that it should need to. I really hate it when games disables things like alt+tab, ctrl+esc, and other key combinations I like to use. |

Sometimes it's not disabled, it's just something they probably forgot or were to lazy to specify in the API messaging loop. But I wouldn't mind them looking into the PrintScreen key and finding a way for the programmer to disable that. I feel as if artwork is a sacred thing and should be well respected... even through these means. =) |

Well I remember Everquest disabling any key combination that would allow you to switch to another applicaiton without exiting the program. This annoyed the heck out of me and it's obvious why they did it. They didn't want people running external applications to edit or view memory to try and precent various types of cheating. This obviously didn't work since people do it anyway. Though I think tis may have recently changed since I think they now allow a windowed mode. Disabling the printscreen key will only cause annoyance to those who wish to legitimitly use it. Those that want screen captures for malintent probably will get them anyway regardless if printscreen is disabled or not. |
The only way to prevent graphics from being captured via a screenshot is to not display them on the screen in the first place.
Anyone who knows me will tell you that I'm all for pricacy rights and creator's rights and I loathe copyright violators and so on... but trying to disable a screenshot is a) pointless and b) going too far. There are plenty of uses for a screenshot, including having a personal record of accomplishments, and getting images for a game review... the first, of course, is a private matter and the second falls well within the doctrine of fair use. It's unfortunate that anyone would be so hard up for graphics that they'd try to rip someone else's off by taking screenshots and then cutting out individual tiles... but the only way to stop this kind of thing is to get people to respect the idea of intellectual property in the first place. |

But I wouldn't mind them looking into the PrintScreen key and finding a way for the programmer to disable that... I see that you did not pay attention: there is *no practical way* to prevent people from taking screenshots, either with PRTSCREEN or via an external program like SnagIt. For BYOND to be able to do that would require installing, at best, some kind of dll that intercepts all the possible key combos that Windows and other programs would use to make screenshots- and that effort could be better put forward to other more desirable features in BYOND 4.0, heck just finishing a Beta of 4.0 is better than waiting to solve a near-insolvable problem! Also, if you are serious about protecting your work, you can take the time to correctly copyright your creations, registering them with your local governments. This gives you the legal backing (to some extent) to pursue damages (not necessarily in the form of money) if your work is pirated. Trying to hunt down and kill the elusive Windoze screen capturing enigma will not protect you. Heck, even if it were practical to do so, I'd just use my digital camera on a tripod and good lighting, and snap pictures right off the screen... no-one could effectively stop me from doing that if I chose to do so. |

If someone goes through all that work to get sprites from a game..well hell! I think they deserve to get them...but realistically I dont think anyone on byond who would want to steal sprites would have thought about doing what you said...as long as its known i made the sprites people edit, that would be enough for me. :)

Why disable it? Perhaps you can find a way to make the SS they just took become totally black? I'm, not sure how/if you can do this but if you can i would certainly use it also.

To an extent. Some DirectX games use wacky palettes, so using Print Screen gives you a nice black screen. However, BYOND doesn't use DirectX (thankfully), and in any case a proper screen capture program can overcome that.
In short: Give up. It is frickin' impossible to stop people taking screenshots. And I mean <font size=+1>IMPOSSIBLE</font>. |

Not really, if dantom would care to disable to function when the program is running then that would fix it. But we all know dantom won't(Either that or it still wouldnt work), so your right. Give up everyone! ^^;

But we all know dantom won't(Either that or it still wouldnt work) Okay... you make it sound like you're certain that it could be disabled and Dantom are just being lazy... then you go ahead and admit that it's possible it wouldn't work anyway. I know you like to pride yourself on being annoying... however, "annoying" isn't the word that comes to mind when you post things like this. :P Bottom line is... anything that's displayed on the screen is on your computer in a format that can be captured. There's no two ways about this. What people are saying, in essence is no more feasible or even sane than, "I want players to read something but not be able to remember it." |

Also, if people really, really wanted to, they could just connect something like a monitor and have it remember what it sees, only to be transfered back to the computer at a later date. Thats just to prove it is impossible to stop people.

I think F2 (screenshot) should be taken out anyways, most players who want to rip tiles/graphics are hopeless newbies anyways, and if the Dream Seeker didn't offer such an easily manipulated option, then it would curb the icon/graphics/tiles/etc. stealing. Sure there are programs that are designed for such things, and the printscreen button, but even I didn't know how to use printscreen until not too long ago. BYOND basically makes it easy to steal things, I mean for godsakes, the "geticon" coding is in the DM helpfile.

See, now this is what I meant. Thats horrible, its like they want everyone to share their work like its worthless until everyone has it. Not a good example but you know, ^^;.

The command in the menu is the one used by F2.
The reason you can't take that away is because it's a client-side thing, not server-side. Rebooting the world is done at the host's end.
But if the command could be disabled, there would be no point; the Print Screen key is still perfectly available.
