It's because the Final Fantasy series is built upon different stores for each sequel, so they each come off their own game yet have the same premise and style of play. Therefore Final Fantasy VII is basically a game of its own, so Final Fantasy VII II would be the sequel to it.
The Final Fantasy name is only there to help promote the game and tell everyone that it has a slow and un-entertaining battle system.

ok folks, this thread ought to be killed (or at least closed) for some of the minor flaming i see here, but seeing as it does contain a few bits of nice conversation, it ain't getting the axe just yet.

IMO its pretty pointless to make a sequal to a game series with sequential titles. Why not just name a new one ff12? It doesn't change the game.
