The expansions for EQ have some incredible art/geography. But it's places you can't even get to until you've played for a while.

Blast! I can't even get my poor Vah Shir out of Shar Vahl. Wait, scratch that, I can't even get my poor Vah Shir out of the Shar Vahl palace!

The original EQ world wasn't as interesting...but it's a HUGE place now with lots of interesting zones. The Dreadlands were my favorite, along with the icy zones.

I remember my brother raiding a big dragon inside a volcano. Ooh here he is! This fellow, in Nagafen's Lair:

Nagafen:

I also remember him raiding a big dragon inside an icy place. Ooh! What luck! I found her! Here she is, in Permafrost:

Lady Vox:

Blast... I really should start playing.

No, I beleive he is referring to inside a volcano, with a dragon roaring and hundreds of people preparing to raid. It's majestic, really.

Don't confuse Fireking with facts...he's seen like 5 minutes of the game and he thinks he knows what it looks like.(I think i know what it looks like? Didnt know you could mind read, but......)

Dont decide whats confusing to me and what isnt. I played the game for 2 weeks. Thats alot longer than 5 days. I saw a crappy crowd of people who really didnt like new comers. I saw nothing but rolling hills, sorry folks but thats ALL i saw, apart from a cave that killed my char.(please dont start a flame war on this, im not complaining that i died in a cave, im just saying another part of the game that i saw.)

If it makes you all happy, ill say this. From the amount of time i played Everquest, i did not enjoy it. Not judging the game as a whole, i must say that from the parts that ive seen of EQ, i do not like it.

That's a perfectly reasonable thing to say.

When you annoy some of us is when you then assume you know the entire game, that you know that the creators never played classic RPGs, or that you even know what the dynamics of the game are.

I played for three years, and wouldn't say I more or less understood the game until after a year or so, myself.

I've attentively watched my brother play for about two years, and I still don't understand most of it!

By the way, I don't play EQ now (I do have a Dark Age of Camelot account), but EQ is what led me to BYOND...
In response to FIREking
Byond is about building your "dream" game, and talking about those games is the best way to find out what other people think of them. I personally don't have anything against reading other people's ideas.

If you don't like it, don't read it, FIREking. It's as simple as that.

Oh @.@ You started in Queynos. I personally avoid that place like the plauge *LOL* For some reason the western side of the original game seems -really- dull to me ^^; But then being the elf freak that I am, I started in one of the more populated zones and got hooked *LOL* ^^

Course.. Then I tried starting an elf when the roleplay server came up @.@ boy was that a mistake. I think we hit like 700ppl in the one zone @.@;;;

Annnnyways ^_^ I know lots of people that cant stand eq, oh well ^_^ I dun mind.

No offense, I mean they probably do look better in game, but those dragons to me, just arn't worth gaining many levels and using up allot of time to see. There is just something I that doesn't make them look real enough. I also would not like to know what it looks like when fighting it. I also wonder, since you bought the game WHY do you have to pay per month? I know this is becuase they need to make more money but they should atleast have a free expansion or something.

Those are the original dragons in the game...the uber mobs in the expansions are much more impressive, as is the geography.

EQ has a lot of problems, and basically an wreck of an endgame...the reason to play, in my opinion, is to have fun in groups and with a guild.

But many people focus on loot and such instead...which I don't find fun either.

Well, if you saw Lord Nagafen compared to an ogre (the tallest race), you'd be amazed. I think an ogre is up to his shin.

If you want to see a cool looking dragon, take a look at Vulak'Aerr

What do graphics have to do with gameplay? Provided that they work, thats good enough. Sure graphics create "environment". But everquest doesnt really utilize it. Plus, i thought the controls were horrible.

Just imagine seeing hundreds of people die from a burst of flame from Vulak'Aerr's mouth. Imagine Vulak'Aerr letting out a giant shriek and falling to the ground.

Graphics set the feel in the game.

thats what i mean, the bold faced type.
I was just simply making a comment that the graphics set the feel, but why does everyone keep going on and on about graphics. Personally i dont think they are that good.

Most powerfull equipment will also hopefully be player-made, against a ratehr large range of possibilities.

Will some people be able to cast an enchantment on a piece of equipment to sway the benefits (and disadvantages) to it?

Equipment will also hopefully decay. So unless you take good care of it, itll be destroyed, or at the very least loose stats.

I assume there will be people who can repair things, etc?

That will hopefully keep some of the rampant 'OH LOOK, A NEW PLAYER, Here's a suit of the best armor in the game!' kinda thing.

A nice way to handle this is to make the stat increases/decreases different depending on how long you've been playing. For example, let's say that Barrion's Diamond Armor is the best suit of armor in the game, but when worn by an absolutely new player, it won't do much at all. This system would probably work better with levels, but I'm sure you can think of a better way :)

Just thoughts, most of which wouldnt be -too- hard to impliment ^_^ I just gotta get offa my ass and do it *L*

I can't wait til you start to actually program this! It sounds very fun! :)

I should just find some coder and start a development group *L*

I'm sure a lot of people would be interested to work with you as a designer. A lot of people, indeed.

If you want good graphics, you'll have to wait tunil Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft has the sense to develop a 128+ bit system that can connect to a gaming server and allows for multiplayer online gaming.

That's something people will pay for...

Wow ^^;;;; I didnt know anyone around here actually liked my ideas -that- much. *grin*

Thank you for your suggestions, of course there would be someone to repair it. If I were to code it right now, Id have an npc that would repair (at a price) and make it so that you could repair things if your blacksmith tradeskill was high enough to do it.

As for your thought on the armour and such.. Actually that makes a bit of sence. 'Defence' would be a skill on its own, so no matter how good a peice of armor would be, it would be pretty useless if you didnt know how to use it. Then maybe apply a cap to lower level armor, so it stops you from raising your defensive abilties beyond a certain point so it makes the more advanced armour nessicary..

ANNNYWAYS >;P Ill stop going on about stuff that I havent even started on (my current engine is actually -really- limited. Im not that great a coder @.@ college is sorta cramping my learning -.-;; )

Im not gonna get into any more of my thoughts here, and I have a fair bunch of them @.@ *L* HOWEVER, if you're really serious about maybe working with my ideas (As I said, with college its really hard to learn to code in here effectivly when you're learning VB, HTML, a couple of database thingies, and a whole bunch of non-computer stuff too @.@ ) email me ^_~ and pass the word along to anyone else who might be intrested in helping out.

Maybe we could orginize something. Perhaps a group of people who perhaps arent talented in -all- aspects of byond, but can do thier parts -well-, could get together to form a production group like I mentioned ^__^ itd be interesting at least *L* Id like to see my ideas used, rather then just collect dust till -I- know how to implement them ^_^;;

Why do people always expect every fantasy game to have magic users of some sort? No one ever gets away from the fighter/thief/cleric/mage stuff...

Well, some people do, its just hard to work out all the little problems with it.

Im personally all for a open-ended, no-level, no-class game, where players simply work on the abilities they want, and have some abilities cancel out others so everyone cant do everything.

I seem to be having lots of ideas today @.@ sorry for subjecting you all to them @.@;;
