I wear a lot of black, particularly leather and lace. I read and write poetry, and absurd little stories that no one seems to understand. I read tarot cards. When I was in college (both semesters), everyone who didn't know me just called me "that weird goth girl."
But I'm not goth. I think anyone who considers themselves "goth," should be shot. Out of a cannon. At a bullet. I mean, really. What an amazingly stupid concept. I've never met anyone who called themselves "goth," or a "goth," who wasn't the world's biggest conformist. An identity that can be summed up in four letters isn't worth having. |

A friend of mine in high school did the whole goth thing...the thing was, there was no goth movement at the time! So he may have been one of the few being an actual non-conformist, if that's an important consideration for that scene. |
No particular reason for me to even post this... I just wanted to babble...
Nope...I'm definitely not goth... My preferred clothing is a pair of relaxed fit, faded blue jeans and a t-shirt (sometimes it's a DBZ t-shirt at that!) My hair is my normal color, I have no piercings, nothing on my body is ever painted black (reference to wearing black fingernail polish, as I have comonly seen on those that would call themselves "goth"...including males...) And I don't even have any of the "angst" commonly associated with "goths"... I'm a rather optimistic person that is rarely depressed, if ever... I try to avoid being sad...because I've come to realize that it does me no good... And fortunately I've really never had anything to be sad about... At least nothing major... Maybe a pet that has died or something like that... But nothing too traumatic has ever happened to me... *knocks on wood* I suppose this is why I'm not that good at writing poetry... Not enough experience with strong emotions in my life to produce anything with emotion... I am very social and tend to make people around me laugh... And I could go on and on... But suffice it to say that I'm most definitely NOT a goth... (And please forgive any misplaced stereotypes I made references to up there... I'm just basing things on the small amounts of information on "goths" that I have gathered from observation...lol And most of that has come from the media...since there really aren't that many goths around here...) |

An identity that can be summed up in four letters isn't worth having. I agree with that statement, but I think some of the people who use the term "goth(ic)" to describe themselves don't use it to sum up their entire identity, but rather as a general term to describe their interests. People are going to group together based on similar interests, and its helpful to be able to communicate them. It's easier to say "I'm a goth" than "I appreciate and use dark themes in my clothing, music, art, etc." (not that that definition is perfect, but I'm too lazy to come up with a more complete one at the moment). This is quite a minority now, it seems. Some also look at "goth" as an entirely-fashion thing. They're somewhat conformist most of the time, but there's also quite a bit of creativity in this group. Still, this is hardly as bad as having an entire pre-packaged identity. -AbyssDragon |
I used to consider myself "gothic", but I feel that I've outgrown wanting to label myself. My general interests are somewhat gothic.. I listen to a fair amount of gothic music (old-school actual goth, not the pseudomusic they pass off today as goth-metal).
Based on the way I dress, I'm often called alternately goth, punk, or completely crazy. I don't really care one way or the other... fitting any one of those terms is not my goal. I make myself appear however I like. My hair is, currently, electric blue. It has been black, a rust-red color, bleached almost white, a red-fade (accidental, but cool looking), and a few more. While one day I may wear knee-high boots over leather pants and a bullet-proof vest, yesterday I wore black cargo pants with a german military jacket over an orange atari-logo t-shirt (these got really popular a few months after I bought mine). Today I'm wearing black bondage pants, a white torn thermal shirt, and a KMFDM t-shirt (its a band). -AbyssDragon |
I'm almost certainly got Gothic blood in me given my largely German lineage. But I have no idea, it could just as easilly be Vandal or any other Germanic tribe. I like black, too, but I think guys wearing white face paint looks really dumb unless A) You are a tribal warrior or B) you are an actor/performer. Although I do routinely dress like the Crow for Halloween because of the uncanny similarity between my appearance in mime paint and Brandon Lee's. Of course he knew alot more martial arts. And I really doubt anyone is Gothic, unless they are perhaps a style of architecture. Goth is another thing entirely, but there aren't many European barbarians running around anymore (unless you count Yugoslavia). Which once again goes to show that most people have no idea what the hell they are talking about (especially me:-)
