You can add more juice by making the blood splatter screen effect scale with how much damage you've taken over the last few seconds rather than having it just be a static image popping up whenever you get hit.

I was going for bare minimal for sprites since I'm one guy, but the actual birds I worked on for several hours are gone. It's not the first time I've lost artwork on graphics gale, but perhaps this will be the last time.  I had everything all planned out, but the meat of my icons are gone.
