Can someone clarify how Flash and BYOND will work together?
I'm not clear on whether BYOND will host BYOND content in Flash or if BYOND will simply support the Flash control in the interface or perhaps something else.

My understanding is, it'll act as a client to join already hosted games, like a more portable version of Dream Seeker (but it doesn't run code, so it can't host or run single-player games) Yes, it's just a port of the client. So the server sends the map, UI, etc and either DS or the new flash client can respond to it. It should open up a lot of avenues since Flash is so ubiquitous on the web. |

For those of us who are scheming on projects right now, should we bet on near feature parity (DSvsF)while understanding there may be bugs, incremental updates, and etc?

The initial release will probably be something like 3.5, where we have limited UI support. The end goal is full 4.0 compatibility. |

You'd still be able to display a map pane and support key+up macros, right? :D

Appreciate the responses and I'm glad to hear the good news. I look forward to these changes.

Awesome, that's pretty much all I need.

So it won't be able to run a single player game?

That's only a tad disappointing. But, that's not to say that I dislike the idea. I can't wait to see it.

Also, there are a zillion single-player Flash games, but, somewhat surprisingly, multiplayer is relatively ripe for a platform at this time. We'd better strike while the iron's hot! |

Awesome news, didn't realize BYOND was getting a flash client could be interesting lol.
Maybe one day in the future it could somehow support single-player? |

I apologize for the renewing of this topic, but...
It would be interesting to see web development usage of this client. If someone were to incorporate a php and/or DMCGI website that communicated with the flash client to create realtime updates to both the website and the game. Could be an interesting feat? I suppose this is already somewhat possible, but placing the game within a website and having them all together is what would essentially be interesting. Skins would be adapted for webdesign! |

I believe at first the Flash client will only connect to live games, not play offline games,.

Correct, but that's not to say you can't host a world that simulates single-player play, it just wouldn't be as smooth as actual single-player.

I was more talking about communication in terms of specific events that occur; leaderboards, big events in game, etc. When the server is down, there is no need, and your website would function normally, with no realtime changes being made due to your game. |
If you're talking about the Flash BYOND client, details are still pretty loose (I don't think they want to set expectations in stone until they've just about finished it, and fully know its features/limitations)
My understanding is, it'll act as a client to join already hosted games, like a more portable version of Dream Seeker (but it doesn't run code, so it can't host or run single-player games)
Really, the potential is enormous. I also think this will make games natively playable on other OSes, so long as they support Flash.
I've always wanted to make one of those web-based games where you log in daily...
I wonder if BYOND should contact Flash portals before the client's release to get their opinion/give them fair warning.
All speculation, of course. Don't get your hopes up until they make an official announcement.
