Hi,
Im reasonably new to byond.
And enjoying playing a few diffrent games while coding my own.

Yet im having a few issues with the documentation and downloads. 98% of the demos/libraries/ectra .. Will not download. Responding in the Byond pager attempting to download followed by Could Not Connect.

How is one supposed to use any of the lib's Even the one that claimed to be the "Most used lib in all of Byond" Deadron's CharacterHandling

Even the one on the top of the list of lib's fails. Its all well and good and having a nice central repository for all this stuff. But if it stop's being hosted. Its useless. Ive yet to find a single one that lets me download it.

The Zip/Download links just forward onto a blank page.
Just to prove a point.

was added yesterday. and is already responding "Cant find" when attempting to download. Seriously. WTF.
Works in the pager for me, but you're correct the zip pages appear to be useless. Give this a go in your pager:

byond://Dantom.YourFirstWorld##version=4

Then post a bug report here:

Explaining the extent of the problem as you understand it so far.
I bet you're using Chrome. There is a bug in Chrome in which it is mangling our links when launching the pager. This has been listed in our own bug reports since although it isn't the website's fault, I still want to find a way to work around it.

Until Google fixes the bug (I'm not sure if it's been reported, but it probably affects all external application launches), the workaround is to use Firefox.

That's why? Crap, you guys should'a told us in the announcements section. I have been having issues, never realized it was my internet browser.

You could've checked the bug tracker, where this has been listed. This isn't the sort of thing that belongs in announcements anyway. Technically this isn't even our bug, but I would like to figure out a workaround for it. If you report the issue to Google (as per the information included in the bug report) it will help them fix it. This is a bug that came into their browser fairly recently because it was working just fine up until then.

Opera also is a work-around for this bug. I've noticed it was chrome, but also figured it was just my buggy computer. Nice to know im finally not at fault, Hope Google fixes this soon.

Thanks for sharing that URL. I made a reoprt about the issue and would encourage all Chrome users to do the same.

Firefox has a lot of clutter in it's interface, it isn't nearly as clean as the Chrome one, and when I used it pre-Chrome, hogged up (I wanted to say a different term) a lot of RAM.

Though Chrome fails bad at Flash stuff...

To be fair, newer versions of Firefox have had their issues, and RAM usage is one of the big ones. But inasmuch as Safari is an inferior browser, it was ridiculous of Google to base their browser off of the Webkit codebase instead of Gecko. The rendering engine alone is enough to keep me from ever switching. That said, Chrome is still young and has shown numerous avoidable bugs, this latest URL mangling crap being just another one.

Flash-wise though, Firefox has its issues there too. When playing Flash games or even watching videos, the browser will frequently "pause" (or "halt" or "stutter"), during which time the video will freeze temporarily but the audio will keep playing, and pausing playback is impossible. This is believed to be an Adobe problem. There have been multiple solutions proposed that involve changing settings in Firefox, but none of them has ever worked 100% for me.

Chrome has arguably the best interface. There is zero clutter. Look at it on top, the tabs go on the titlebar, instead of elsewhere, leaving more room for the page you are watching.

That generally happens to me if I watch videos with full-screen while having a high-demand game running. The "solution" is watching unfullscreened, or to get out of it when it freezes, Ctrl+Atl+Delete.

Besides the stuff Moonlight said about Chrome's interface which I agree with, I never have problems when running Chrome. I've had problems in the past, but recently I've had absolutely no problems around the site with links or pop-up screenshots. I can watch movies and flash stuff just fine too.

Most of your problems with Firefox seem hardware related. Hardware as in upgrade your pc, yo.

Dunno if I can speak for Lummox, but 2GB RAM and Pentium 4 processor shouldn't be struggling to load simple freaking sites like BYOND.
In response to Moonlight Memento
I have an old PC, far less powerful than what you just posted. For the last week or so I've watched maybe 200 HD videos and a bunch of HD livestreams related to E3 without having Firefox stutter even once. I'm hard-pressed to believe whatever problems you're having aren't just because of your particular system.

The main problem is Firefox has never been designed with heavy usage in mind. Its memory footprint still creeps up steadily completely in spite of the changes made in the 3.x series.

While I don't really want to continue to derail the thread (perhaps you can split this off to Computers & Tech), I haven't had any troubles with memory usage since the 3.5+ releases. After browsing all morning, including watching videos, I'm sitting at 100MB memory for Firefox, and I also use several extensions.

a temp fix could be that the pager periodically checks the clipboard for a byond:// link, so for people using chrome they could right click -> copy link address or automate that process for broken chrome versions. right now not only is the pager launcher broken, but zip downloads as well. only way for us to download anything is by changing browser or copying the link and using the pager to open location.

Clutter on Firefox is largely due to the user's own preference. I don't like Chrome because it has one interface which has flipped the address bar/tab flow I learned when I picked up Firefox, and I can do precisely nothing about it.

What's the brass tacks of Chrome? WebKit and threaded tabs. Gecko is superior, and the threaded tabs are a gimmick at best -- I remember when I first tried Chrome and the flash player was crashing on Youtube, which would defunct every tab with a flash player module in it. If that's the case, what's the damn point?
