Ok, along time ago, maybe early last year, I started a Naruto game from scratch. The reason I stopped, was because I had no idea where to go from where I was.
I had
some basic skills,
good icons, thanks to a friend,
a few procs to handle the skills, and what happens after certain things,

but... I had no idea what to do after that. I figured asking Byond for help on the subject, It'd be easier, instead of randomly working on things I don't need yet.
So, what would be the smartest way to start an anime game, and continue from there? Don't include basic things that are true for all game types (unless totally necessary.)
Well as a basic rule of thumb you should start working on the game in the order somebody would be playing it in. I don't really understand why you think developing an anime game is different than developing an original game. The only difference is the hard part is already done for you(storyline, characters, plot, skills, etc) so there no real thinking needed.

I guess your right. I just some times get into a project and wonder what I'm going to do next. I guess it's just me. Not great as some one to work alone.
I always start by drawing everything out. Then I program what happens when you log in, character creation etc. I may or may not create a map since mapping is sort of like polishing the game and is not necessary at the beginning. Then, I get to work on the gameplay or combat system. After thats done, I test, add finishing touches and make a public release. Pretty simple really.

The hard part shouldn't be figuring out what to do next. It should be figuring out HOW you're going to do whatever it is you're doing next.
well im surprised no one freaking thought of this but to start out with watch the freaking anime thats the most important part do not make any game based on anything unless you have read/watched the source material otherwise there is a 99.99% chance your game will epic fail really hard and their is no wide audience there are 3 factions in anime games

anime lovers(the cool kids) i fall here for anime games these ppl will blindly try a game just because its about their favorite anime some will like your game just because they like the anime regardless of how good or bad your game is others will try it because its anime and leave or stay because it does/doesnt suck(like me)

the indifferent(dont love dont hate but could go either way depending on game) these ppl dont care anime or not they play because its a good game i fall more into this catagori\y for everything accept anime games

the haters(the fags) hate anime and everything about it wont even try your game and will try to discourage ppl from playing and you from making it they wont give your game a chance they just hate it cause its anime

this is all the info you'll need good luck soldier *solutes*
What's up with this Naruto thing with BYOND. Make an original game is my suggestion, but if you really want to continue with this, then my suggestion is fallow where ever your wants take you. Whatever you want to add, do it.

For Example, maybe you could make a heavy stone door that needs a specific password to open.

Or maybe a switch that requires a specific magical command applied to it?

Whatever you want.
Well, usually when you make a game on BYOND you're supposed to have a pretty good idea of what your making and why...
