I just downloaded it. After a reboot I try to go onto BYOND and other sites and it prevented firefox from connecting. The only work around I found was to completely disable the web shield. Is their another work around besides disabling it?

Avast has never even helped me with viruses, my idea of a best defense is just being net smart. For the past year and a half i have not even used a firewall or a virus scanner and I have yet to experience any problems or slow downs.

First off, what exactly is Avast? Second, if it's some form of firewall or anti-virus then perhaps you could go into its preferences or options and find a way to allow certain things access.

Avast! Antivirus. Don't be deterred by the "Purchase" button; there's a home edition that's free to use.
