Make a big deal out of it! holy cow is 4.0 a big deal. Post it in the announcements first and then put a big blurb up on the games.byond.com page. :D let everybody know about it!

Disabling the hub functions for about 10 minutes would be a good way to get it attention. People would flock to the site and then see 4.0 and possibly forget anything ever happened.

I'm just hoping that people don't hate it like some did with 3.5.

I have no doubt that many, many people will hate it. I'd put it at somewhere around 20% of current players or even higher, dead reckoning.

This is because when 4.0 is released, all of the existing 3.5 games will be stuck with a slightly-more-inferior interface than they had before.

However, once developers start making use of all of 4.0's better features, particularly the advanced macros and the skins, people will wonder how they ever got by without it.

(I can still remember when DUNG didn't even have smooth movement.)

Actually, I imagine Tom thinks of 4.0 as a bastard that he wants to get out the door so it'll stop tormenting him, or at least get the little ingrate to stop stealing money from his wallet.

Someone gets it! Oh how I've longed for you, sweet freedom!

Ok, so 4.0 is probably as ready as it will be. Now to figure out how to release this sucker.

Finalize it, and put it on the website. But make it so only one key can download it per day. And watch the complains roll in.

Otherwise, the same way you did with 3.5? Announcements forum and "News" within the current BYOND software.

I'm actually interested in what happens once 4.0 is released. There are too many scary rumours to count. (I wonder if Dan will be around for the release of 4.0.)

i'm glad to see that BYOND 4.0 will be released.

However, many big anime players will not be happy with this upgrade because BYOND 4.0 disables User defined macros. I love the fact that you can code in your own macros with the DMF editor and edit the entire interface of the window itself. But unless many of the programmers(lol) of most anime games ajust to BYOND 4.0, they'll probably die out. I have an outdated version of 4.0(build 365 D:) but i love it and cant wait until the beta release :D

No, it doesn't. In build 368 user-defined macros can be defined, but only as long as the developer hasn't overridden them.

4.0 is like the son that Tom wants to quit mooching his time and money and move out.

Then start supporting him.

Yes, that was the joke. ;-)

I also heard that God will show himself!

Man this is exciting. I haven't peaked at all since the leaking started, I've wanted to wait until the final release. It's like christmas! Any day now!

I'm in the same boat! Waiting patiently has gotten me all giddy and excited :D

With all of the new features, statpanels (or "info" panels as they're now called) will be for newbies and for pre-interface versions of games. With the buttons and grids and output areas, there's enough control for people to recreate their own statpanels that fit better with the game interface.

Oh yeah totally, a quick, easy way to display stats and inventory, it is totally only for newbies. I think that is an ignorant statement you are making.
In response to Revenant Jesus
I agree, i for one think that the statpanel system work pretty good for what i use it for, and i think it would be retarded to put all this effort into using a new grid system that would do the job in the best case scenario, just as well. I like the tabs, i will use grids though but theres lots of stuff that goes well in stat panels.

First person EVER to take offense over statpanels.
In response to Elation
I am not taking offense, I am simply saying it was a ignorant statement.
In response to Revenant Jesus
Even pre-4.0, experienced developers did tend to stray from verb and stat panels, so Foomer isn't exactly making an ignorant statement. I personally make it a point to never use verb or stat panels.

Release a new DM Guide and make people read it, then wait a day or two to release 4.0 itself.

Reading is only part of the learning process. If all you did was read to learn, mathematics, programming and everyone else would be so much easier than they are.

In order to learn, you have to experiment with. Make mistakes and learn from them. So your suggestion there, would probably cause more trouble than it's worth. Besides, they'd have to write the new DM guide before the release.
