I have another idea.
Why don't the BYOND staff remove all front-end code of the website, completely knock off the hub system, destroy all website interaction; except the ability to download the software and just develop the system without the hassle of everyone coming at them and complaining every step of the way?
Seriously, this is how I've seen the community evolve over the years I've been here.
BYOND 4.0 features announced, everyone is ecstatic.
BYOND begins to move towards 4.0, everyone is ecstatic.
[First Step towards 4.0]
Pager is separated from Dream Seeker to allow features of BYOND 4.0, everyone complains.
[Second Step towards 4.0]
BYOND Members section is created to help pay for BYOND 4.0, lots of people complain.
[Third Step towards 4.0]
The ability to rank games is given so people can have a say about listing, everyone complains.
[Fourth Step towards 4.0]
The guild system is implemented to allow for better organisation of BYOND 4.0, everyone complains.
Tell me, do you actually want BYOND 4.0? Seriously, it looks to me like, EVERY STEP the staff have taken to bring about the BYOND Software Revolution has been met with anger and angst. I don't know how they put up with all of those complaining.
I can see it now.
[Fifth step towards 4.0]
BYOND Website is completely overhauled and all 4.0 systems are implemented, everyone hates the new design and complains.
[Ending Result]
BYOND 4.0 is released, with all the features everyone wanted and expected, everyone complains because it wasn't completed earlier; everyone complains because they don't like the start-menu icon; everyone complains because they dislike the name Build Your Own Net Dream.
I hate to break it to you all, but change is the step towards the future. If nothing changes, nothing evolves.

I never had a problem with them charging people for the BYOND members blogs and stuff. I think it was a great idea, and if I wasn't dead ass broke, I'd most likely pay for one.
But them just destroying the lives directory like that, was not needed. You say better organisation of BYOND, but right now it isn't working like that, they should have though more before just stabbing the games live in the back and going with the new way. I see no reason for them killing it like that. |

I'm not sure if this will help, but it's my impression that some people don't realize you can skip the guild pages themselves...from the games page, you can click on the red text indicating the number of live games/players to jump directly to the games listing for that guild. |

Don't use all caps in the title of your post!
The Top Ranked Games was originally global to the website, which was unfair because the games that were the most popular happened to be some of the worst games, in terms of code stability, graphics, and actual gameplay value. When people began artificially inflating their games by offering perks for ranking their game their favourite (and often punishing people who stopped ranking their game their favourite), the system began to become worth less and less. Now, ranks are on a per guild basis. Top-Ranked Games appear in the Guilds in the "Other Games" section of those guilds. Official guilds list all of the games and sort them in order of rank, but the official guildmasters can choose which games get given special mention in the Favorites box. |

You can still see the BYOND Rank for games by choosing that sorting option in a guild list. |

I guess my problem is, I wouldn't know where half the games I play would be; in what category etc. That is my definite problem that takes extra clicking and working out.
//off topic// Oh my goodness, this thread just dominates the whole first page of the forum whenever one person posts lol. //off topic// Obviously this is a big issue everyone is getting involved in. Byond devs, make it possible to have polls and votes and crap. I want to see the hard core information on this issue but I want it to be on the Byond forums. |

Hub entries will list which guilds they belong to in future, so that should help.
As for polls, I think I should point out that this is not a democracy. =) That doesn't mean that your views won't be taken into account if you keep your criticism constructive, but merely taking a poll isn't going to convince anyone. |

I agree. While the Guild feature is nice, and offers a pleasant alternative to the abused ranking system (We all know it is), it just doesnt offer the convienience that the old list had. Perhaps it wouldnt be a bad idea to have a "Games Live" list?

You now see a list of *all* games (no matter in which guilds they belong). An additional row on the <table> is added to show which genre the game is (based on the official guild they're in. i.e. if they're in BYOND RPG it would say "RPG" and if they're in BYOND ANIME it would say <s>"Rip"</s> "Anime")). A "filter" button on the same page. You click it, and then specify the guilds you don't want games from (either provide a list of all guilds, allow choosing by text-box or provide only a list of official guilds). How to hide filth: 1. Click "Show all". 2. Click "Filter". 3. Select "BYOND Anime". 4. Click OK. 5. Bookmark the page for future usage. |
You know when you click "play games", I think they should go back to the old listing system. I hate this new category listing page, I liked it better when you could just browse all the live games. This new listing system is just a pain.

Okay, HUGE list of things said so far... everyone wants a list of all live games right? You know that pager thing everyone has? Go to the games tab... hit the drop down and view all games, and click status... now you see all the games that are live.. that simple.

Non-members dont have this benefit though. I tried it on my other key and it only has 5 games listed.
Also, great way to revive a 4 month old topic, lol. |
I agree. I came back from an overly long hiatus to find this new system in the works and I hated it.
I'm a BYOND member so I have my nice little pager, but that still doesnt let you see the game description unless you hut "Info" In my opinion, the new layout should be kept, but there should also be a link to let you browse the hub like you used to be able to. Honestly though, I love the guild system. It helps filter out those extremely annoying games and the like, but on occasion I would still like to be able to actually browse the hub like in times old. [EDIT] 5 minutes of looking and I found this: The Hub! |
Even though the GamesLive system did have its flaws, and the new Guilds system might fix up some holes here and there, neither of these systems can successfully and effectively replace the other.
The Guilds System takes more time to navigate through (No, I'm not talking clicks wise. I'm talking load-times), and not all games are listed under the Guilds, making browsing via Guilds a large hassle.
The Games Live list worked great for most things except for organization, but that was okay because it listed everything and no matter how long you search you'll eventually come to something that's interesting, as long as it's being hosted. So what if there is a large number of Rips? People who are just browsing know to go straight past them if they aren't interested.
Don't get me wrong, I like both systems, but I don't think that the Games Live thing should be completely phased out. Both of these should be available to players, no matter how ugly and unattractive one of them might be.
