You can't get donations? Well, you can get donations for anything. I think you just can't charge for subscription or in-game items. You also can't sell the game. Maybe selling GM status, but that's it.

If its a fan game, you can't get donations for anything related to the game..As in no donations to maintain the server, or to per se "inspire" the programmers to work harder on the game..Its pretty much best to just go original and call it a day..

I have seen some published fan games that ask for donations.

If you have supporting evidence for this claim, then please do use the support form to report it. They're certainly not allowed to do it.

Why can you not take money in the form of donations? Why can't players just give you money because they feel they'd like to? What if the owner advertised donations in all of his games, just for the heck of getting money and a player from his fangame happens to give him money?

Still 'illegal'..Just saying its a donation cna be a disguise for actualy payment..Meh it seems like it can get out of hand(dtermining if the donation for a fangame was actually made ofr the server and not the game itself) and not really worth the modertaion. I'm thinking you can't just ask for donations, but if someone just gives you a donation outside of byond..I think that may be a different thing..But once again, the modertaion tactics come into play..

Thanks for the report, the game has been removed from the published section of the hub and a message has been sent to the author.

Because that still counts as profit. It's irregular profit, sure, but money is money, whether or not it's being exchanged for a product or service.

If one of his games is a fan game, then he's not allowed to advertise for it. Simple. He shouldn't accept donations either, even if they are given freely.

I question.

It's illegal for the fan game itself to take donations.

But what if a user puts together a team and website. Just say the team is MR A. And the website is A-TEAM. This website has links to all their work (Fan games and not). Would it be legal to put a donation box on the site? I assume it would be because it's not the fan game directly. But then again, they are affiliated to a fan game. Directly affiliated to one, no less.

Really, it's in most cases (i.e., those where the original material is outside of the public domain) illegal for a fan game to exist at all w/o the author's permission (even if it makes no profit).

And what of that? Surely a team that is merely affiliated with a fangame could receive donations on their website/forums and relate them to either other projects or the 'company' itself, am I right about that?

There's no point trying to squirm around it. If the money is either officially or tacitly in payment or donation for a fangame, then it's not allowed. If it's for a non-fangame, then it's allowed. Period.
