Hello! i've had the pleasure of meeting some of you already, either through your help in the How-To forum, or in the tutorials you've written.

I'm not a programmer, plain and simple. I've always wanted to learn, but i lack any intuitive bent that most people who program well seem to have.

I'm a college student and part-time bank teller. My major is mathmatics education, with a minor in natural science.

I'm a big rpg game buff, and i've played a great many mmog's over the past 5-6 years. I've been one of those people who play and then go "well it's nice, but i wish it did this, and this, and handled that differantly." It's been a minor fantasy of mine to program my own game, but up until finding Byond, i was limited to RPG maker on my husband's PS2 =P

I will be joining the ranks of Byond members once i set up a pay pal account. I look forward to learning the in's and out's of all of Byond to the best of my abilities while making the rpg of my dreams in my favorite graphics ever, 32 bit!

Thank you all in advance for the help i'll need to keep from drowning in the code.
Welcome to BYOND!

Did you ever play Asherons Call?
In response to A.T.H.K
nope, i'm afraid not.

I've played daoc, eq, eq2, horizons, dndo, and now guild wars.
Welcome to BYOND!

You play Dungeons and Dragons Online? Have you ever played with a guy named "Aracoudious" or "Arafadi"? =P
You're my new BYOND Best Friend.
In response to Elation

Fantastic! What we need more of in this community are gamers who understand mechanics like using dice and cards, pencil-and-paper roleplaying, etc., especially where they're mathematically oriented. You probably have some great insights on design issues.

heh.. it would be nice if i did, but right now i need to learn the programming. I can't think up much until i understand what can or cannot be done with Byond.

Sad, yet true. I've been trying to quit byond for 3 years now. As you can see nothing has worked. Sorry to say it but he's right, your stuck with us now.

A good way to start is to read Zilals tutorials after you can understand them, I would move onto the DM guide. Then there ere alot of byondscape articles and some demo's. Welcome!

Watch out for Icon games, I was on there a LONG time on my first account until I lost over 1000 icons, and found out how to make icons and map. Then I found programming, which I'm still working on. But watch out for Icon games, they're not bad but spammers and alot of new people hang out around their, and start being real "butt" heads(didn't want to be censored) to people who don't agree with what they think, or can't understand what they say.
But besides that, Welcome to
 Build Your Own Net Dream!

i read all three of Zilal's works and they helped a lot with the basics. I've also gone through the "Step" world tutorial. It has some things in it now i'm trying to work out. I'm bumbling my way through a mini test game of my own, trying to take what i am reading and apply it to a small map to enforce my learning.

i think it's safe to say i have icons and icon states mastered! now i'm trying to figure out the hard stuff, like verbs, variables, procs, and lists 'n' stuff.

I suggest you also master the art of replying to the right post on the forums... :P

'Fraid I missed that pleasure...Hello!

Good news! BYOND is like one of the greatest places to start learning, I think. That's where I started, and I'm still hanging around this joint even after moving up to some "more powerful" languages. The site's haunted; you can't leave. You won't leave.

I will be joining the ranks of Byond members once i set up a pay pal account. I look forward to learning the in's and out's of all of Byond to the best of my abilities while making the rpg of my dreams in my favorite graphics ever, 32 bit!

Great to hear. :)
Here are some excellent places to start:
- http://developer.byond.com/docs/guide --- DM Guide
- http://developer.byond.com/docs/ref --- DM Reference (easier to find by pressing F1 in Dream Maker)
- http://developer.byond.com/hub/Dantom.YourFirstWorld --- A very good demonstration of a beginning project
- http://developer.byond.com/hub/Deadron.StepBYOND --- Another great demonstration with a lot of helpful info
- http://developer.byond.com/hub/DM/Demos --- DM Demos, a bunch of pre-approved demonstrations of "stuff" by fellow BYONDers

Many of the resources are a bit dated (eh, I had them around when I started 4 years ago), but not too much has changed in the system with respect to what each teaches you, so each resource should be good. I've heard that Zilal's tutorials are good, too (and I believe that someone linked to them), but I've never actually read any of them.

Thank you all in advance for the help i'll need to keep from drowning in the code.

I'm still saying my thank-yous. ;)

This is a very good way to start. I initially found BYOND after playing EverQuest back in the day, and it inspired me to want to create my own ambitious MMOG...I tried jumping into that right away, and it was a big mistake and I wasted a lot of time. You really need a sense of how to make things work with BYOND, and of what it takes to put together a game itself regardless of BYOND, and how to publicize your game in this community, before jumping into the tough stuff.

What I've found useful is thinking about little games I liked as a kid and recreating those in a short period of time. The classic Pipe Dream game led to DragonSnot, a fun little air traffic game led to Birdland. Putting together those games was invaluable to working on more ambitious stuff.

Another thing I've learned: For most of the games I've worked on, we kept them under wraps until they were ready to roll out, when we'd release them as a completed item. This was a mistake, and those games weren't as good or as successful as they could have been.

It has turned out to be more effective to talk about a game ahead of time, host it for alpha and beta testing, get player feedback, and iterate until it works. Player feedback can cause you to make big changes early on that make the game more playable and more fun, and the process of talking about it before it's released helps work up some publicity.

Anyway, have fun! This is really a great system for putting together multi-player games and tapping into a player-base of thousands.

Welcome to BYOND.

I myself stumbled onto BYOND when I was searching for sprites for a game maker game I was making. I somehow ventured into Xooxer's icon site. I think it was his anyway. I saw byond, though I didn't check it out until a couple of weeks later. And now I'm hooked here and staying.

Two things you need to be warned about. Stay away from rips. Rips are games that have been coded by someone else. Many games on BYOND are rips, sadly enough. Also, stay away from fan games such as Naruto and DBZ. We have so many on BYOND at the moment, and have no need for any other. Even if you created the worse game on BYOND, yet it was original, it would be better than all of these rips.

Anyway, have a fun time on BYOND.
