Well... what are the specs on your desktop? The x1400 isn't that great of a card, it has a small amount of pixel shader units and vertex shader units... but it does offer pixel shader 3 support.

I didn't get a present when I finished year 12...
(Year 12 is the final year of school in Australia) |
Year 12 is the final year of school here in America as well. Of course, we refer to it as Senior year, or grade 12. Year works just as fine though.
Kujila, your laptop sounds awesome. I'm not into laptops much because of the keyboard layout. I could never get used to them, I have little patience for something missing a few keys, and the lack of a mouse drives me nuts. I know you can buy one for it, but what's the point of the laptop then? The mouse is not as portable. |
That thing is far better than my laptop, but I had to pay for my own. Mine is an Acer 4062 WLi or something along those lines. 1.78Ghrz, 512mB ram, and a Intel i915 graphics chip. Not the best, but it runs compiz great, after you get it configured that is.
I don't use mine a ton, it mostly just sits there and collects dust. I have been meaning to use it as an extra server. I suppose that is a good use for it while it is just sitting here. Whoever asked: The point in a laptop is varied. We have 2 laptops and 2 desktops in this house. The laptops are normally used for computing though the house. My mom surfs the net while stuff is on the stove, I surf while watching TV, or whatever. I also enjoy taking my laptops to friends houses and meeting business at local wifi spots and talking business. |
Parents (at least mine) go nuts when it comes to college gifts.
I was flabbergasted when I opened my laptop, I about wet myself. They went all out. I was "expecting" a $399 Inspiron B120 I asked for, but I got an uber-computer that runs SecondLife faster than my desktop... Phew. God bless my loving family. ~Kujila |
Desktop has a AMD Athlon 64 (2 ghz), 1 GB RAM, and a Geforce 6200TC PCI-E card... I'm assuming it's the video card or the 98% filled hard-drives (lol) causing the slowdowns...
~Kujila |
It's the video card. And I'm not sure how an AMD desktop compares to an Intel laptop(I would assume the AMD one is faster but no idea by how much). But it's certainlly the video card.
|
I'm thinking it's the harddrive, since he says slowdowns... maybe he's referring to doing things on the computer that doesn't have to do with games. Get rid of some of that crap on your computer. =p
Of course, that outdated graphics card will cause slowdowns on the more recent games. Nice Bottleneck. |
You are right, it is the graphics card. A 6200 is a weak card, and SL runs rather bad even on great hardware. A 2.0Ghrz AMD is probably about equal to a 3.0-3.6Ghrz P4. It is also 64 bit, if that where being used, it would make a good performance difference. I currently have a 3200+ AMD(2.0) and it runs way faster than my old P4 2.4
|
Not by that much, the intel core for laptops are much better then the desktop p4, and can almost keep up to the desktop AMD64. thats why the next gen prossors from intel will be based on the core prossors.
here is a quick review on them. http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2648&p=1 |
My friends and extended family have given me $100 so far: I expect more tonight.
Graduation is awesome. ~Kujila |

The only online game I've tried on here was SecondLife, and that was only for a moment :(
The game ran quick, but I'm not sure the content of the game was loading (SecondLife streams the content as it's needed) loaded quicker or slower. Browsing speed seems the same to me, though. 802.11g is quick! ~Kujila |
