COSTA MESA, Calif. - A middle school student faces expulsion for allegedly posting graphic threats against a classmate on the popular MySpace.com Web site, and 20 of his classmates were suspended for viewing the posting, school officials said.
Police are investigating the boy's comments about his classmate at TeWinkle Middle School as a possible hate crime, and the district is trying to expel him.
According to three parents of the suspended students, the invitation to join the boy's MySpace group gave no indication of the alleged threat. They said the MySpace social group name's was "I hate (girl's name)" and included an expletive and an anti-Semitic reference.
A later message to group members directed them to a nondescript folder, which included a posting that allegedly asked: "Who here in the (group name) wants to take a shotgun and blast her in the head over a thousand times?"
Because the creator of a posting can change its content at any time, it's unclear how much the students saw.
"With what the students can get into using the technology we are all concerned about it," Bob Metz, the district assistant superintendent of secondary education, said Wednesday.
Metz said the students' suspensions in mid-Febuary were appropriate because the incident involved student safety. Some parents however questioned whether the school overstepped its bounds by disciplining students for actions that occurred on personal computers, at home and after school hours.

Hmm,is it a private school? I didn't think things outside school could be of school relevance, only legal? Or was it passed around in school?
|
Well it is legal..Where I live, if you get into a conflict outside of school but in the area(at a nearby McDonalds or something) you can get school discipline..Its kinda bull to me..0_0
|
That is pretty stupid, but I guess if it is in your school discipline rules, it fits. As far as I know, my school does nothing for matters pertaining to outside of school activities, unless in someway the school becomes a 3rd party from it.
[edit] Though, I am glad the school took care of this matter. I really despise people who act like that. |
But there is no gaurentee that those 20 students actually went into the area with the thing to kill the student.

You can get suspended for viewing some ASCII characters put in the right order, now?
Yesterday I got detention for thought-crime. =( |

If something happens off of school grounds, and even when school is not in session, then you can still get in trouble for it by the school such as getting suspended? Why you ask? Because it can lead to problems within the school. For example, if a student beats up another student on a Saturday morning off of school grounds, both of those students could get suspended because when Monday morning came around, they would cause problems. Even the idea of this happening can get a student expelled. The reason being? Well, you never know if it is true or not. The fact that he wrote it, even as a joke, can get him in a lot of trouble. It can even get him some jail time. There is no way of telling whether he is kidding or not. |

I disagree Kunark, with the way how unstable kids are in this day and age and with how many schools have been blown away because of one or two crazy kids, not only should the parents be involved, but so should the school and the police.
I don't think I need to remind you all of the kid who took out half of his school with pipe bombs and then shot the rest of the school up with a shot gun. Stuff like this needs to get nipped in the bud as soon as possible and then find out WHY stuff like this is happening. A threat is only a threat until something really happens, then it is more. |

I don't think the people who visited his myspace should. |

Where I go to school, you have to have "Good standing in the community" to graduate. Does that mean having over 100 friends on your myspace? |

Having lived in California for about 8 years or so and Denmark the rest of my life, I've seen a fairly radical cultural difference between the two. In general, peope from Denmark tend to be much more open-minded to virtually anything and the boundries are *far* wider than they are in the US. Guess what ? No one goes apes here and shoots up a school- Don't get me wrong though, plenty of horrible things happen in Denmark. Last friday a 23 year old guy went to his ex-girlfriends school party, stabbed her down and two guys attempting to help her, and hung himself afterwards. The girl is dead, the two guys who helped her are safe but still hospitalized. I believe, personally, that the problem has absolutely nothing to do with a teenager blowing steam on a MySpace account but so much more to do with parenting, the state of the social fabric amongst schoolkids in the US and the societies support of the 'Be the best or you aren't good enough' mind-set which is fairly devestating to a majority. I don't particularly believe you're going to catch the right kids by policing things like that, either. Is it screwed up to post something about blowing someone to pieces with a shotgun ? Certainly. If the school found out, should it get involved ? Certainly - With the parents. Open a dialog, express concern, inform the parents. The school isn't going to be able to solve the problem in any case, if there even is one. /shrug |
