I have several directories (Nigh 80 GB) I want to save. Any options besides buying a backup drive? Can I put them on their own partition or something? I may be building a new PC after Christmas, but I want to keep all of my precious files...

It is not worth saving your install directorys, they wont do you any good when the system is reinstalled. Just save your profile directory(C:\Documents and Settings\*\ *being your login name). This folder contains all the info of most of your programs and games. Clean out the temp folders to save a lot of room, I know there is one in your profile folder, it can get big. There is probably one in the Second Life profile (C:\Documents and Settings\*\Application Data\Second Life\Cache) Clean out that, I know mine was about 2 gigs, but I didn't need any of it, it was just textures and whatnot for SL, they get redownloaded when you run the game again.

if you are planning on building a new computer- maybe it's just easier to splurge for a new drive to go with it, then just add your existing drive to the case, using the new drive as your boot/system drive, and the current drive as a data or backup drive.

Hmm, I'd suggest using a few CD-RW transfers if it was just a moderate amount of files, but 80GB is too high for that... I'd say just make sure they're all on the same drive, then attatch that drive to the new computer and A)copy the files and remove the old drive, or B) keep the old drivew plugged in as strage for all the files.
If you're needing to reformat that drive or all your drives, you may have to use a seperate drive to temporarily hold your files. There may be another way to do it, but I don't know it. --Vito | |
Buy a few big harddrives, or don't worry about it because there is no way you have 1.4t of data that is actualy worth keeping unless you work for a large company or are doing a lot of movie pirating.

You could stick them onto a different partition and then only format the partition with things that you want to keep. You may not be able to make a partition large enough, though. Depends on how much free space you have and what partitioning tools you have. And it'd take a while.

Or, compress them together. Split the archive into 2 gig files, and email them to your self on GMail.
I'm not sure on how long either of them would have your files on thier server though. Rapid Share deletes them automaticly if they havnt been downloaded in 30 days.
