Just a little post that will hopefully bring some nostalgic feelings for BYOND's oldbies...
Ah, 7/28/02, the date that I created my first BYOND key, DarkHiei. BYOND was so much different back then. I mean, seriously, check out what the WayBack machine snagged just one day before I joined(which is incidentally my father's birthday =P): 7/27/02.
Compare that child site to the highly professional and organized site that you see today. I remember one day I got on BYOND(I had access to the Net only once every one or two weeks, mind you), and noticed that the site looked completely different. =P I was quite lost for a while.
And then, of course, the college dreamers that pieced the puzzle together. I think it's great that Dan and Tom could come through to provide us a programming/gaming platform that is supplementary for both younger and older users. Were it not for BYOND, I may still be in the dark on programming. DM is quite an easy language to learn, and before reading that DM was loosely based on C++, I had never even heard of C++. And after learning DM, C++ wasn't hard at all to pick up on as a second language.
So basically, Thank you Dan and Tom for providing such a great system for us to abuse and use as we desire! =P

SSJBrolly NICK! I never knew :) Honestly, me either. =P No offense to Nyck, but I had you figured for a BYOND newbie. Speaking of "Newbie," I think we should have our old Newbie Central back, so that we can answer simple questions that newer users are lost on. I mean, sure, mostly everything you see in Developer How-To or Code Problems is newbish, but it couldn't hurt(well, it would take extra space...) too much to have a nice little haven for newbs, right? Maybe with something like that, they'd be less likely to copy+paste code from demos and other games' source files. Of course, I can't say for sure that Newbie Central's revival would cut off the flow of ripped games, or that new users would be brave enough to ask a question in a forum specifically labeled for newbs, but it is a nice thought. =) Hiead |
*nods*
The reasons for the switch are many. 1) Newbie Central was used both for Code Problems and Developer How-To questions, while the Code Problems board only accepted code problems. It needed to be better divided. 2) More experienced users felt intimidated any time they had to turn to Newbie Central for an answer. "I'm not a newbie, but I'm about to post here. Does this mean I should know this already? Will I look stupid?" ...Yes, 2 is "many". |
SpaceTug Alpha
(BEST ***********ing GAME EVER!) Anyway, I remember the old times, I remember when we first got hub icons, everyone was SO excited (atleast I was anyway), I beleive DWO was one of the first games to set up their hub icon. [EDIT: Hmm I wonder what would happen if you could somhow register a BYOND account with the waybackmachine, =) Date joined: 01/01/00 |

It would work as if you'd use the current interface. ...Depending on how the archiving is done and how much the key database has changed. Sorry to disappoint you. =P |
Heh. Look at Raekwon act like a newbie.

Heh. Look at Raekwon act like a newbie. Just so you know, you don't have to use the wayback machine for forum posts. ([link]) |

I learned that when trying to do a forum search...had to go through the Next things(It's interesting to see that Andre Baldy's post didn't exist back then, as well as several posts that were deleted bu the poster or a moderator. =P Hiead |
