I highly suggest to not start advertising. Sure, we'll get a good amount of good programmers, who will actually contribute. But for every 1 good member we'll get 4 or 5 trolls or flamers or noobz, etc. I think the best advertising is word of mouth.

I imagine that if advertising for BYOND is in the future, it won't be until after the 4.0 release and lots of 4.0 bug fixing, stabalizing, etc. I'm guessing that the BYOND team wants to make sure they have a top-notch product to offer before they break away from the good ole' word-of-mouth scheme.

Not all forms of advertising cost money, and they may not even try to use those forms of advertising.
I wasn't saying for them to do it now (at least I thought I wasn't), I meant that they definately need a good plan for advertising when they start. | |
They could try to get a news station to do a story on Byond. WGN might do it, Larry has a surfin the web portion where he might mention Byond if you bring it to his attention =D

I find it difficult to explain to someone what BYOND is in a few sentences. I usually have to press to them that it's a game engine which allows you to make you're own games, but you don't have to make your own game with it. You can play games other people already made, and talk to the developers of that game, even. Those are a couple general sentences describing BYOND, but you are not describing or inculding a few important features of BYOND there. | |
You use this software alot, I would assume, to be making such a topic on it. I can't possibly understand why you DON'T want to pay money to Dantom. I would pay more than the 15$ gladly if it wasn't my mum's money instead of mine.
I don't get it. Can you not afford 15$? Do you not think that Dantom has earnt it? You admit you started this whole topic over losing the pager... Notice who actually subscribes. It's not the DBZ players/rippers. It's the people that make the games you play, because they realise how good BYOND is. Or they just wanted the pager back. >_> | |
I like how this thread has turned out. Its turned from negative to positive (sorry about that by the way, i understand now and am thinking of buying a byond membership). I think the best way to advertise would be to reliable people that you know via word of mouth because of the reason popisfizzy said. And it makes sense and you know it.

I would have added in a cool new feature and only allowed people who pay to use it, i dont know what the feature would be but something like, stand alone game, 3d, improved networking, something that would really atract lots of people.

If you let the "noobz" and "flamers" stop you from advertising and progressing BYOND as a whole, then the terrorists have already won.

If there were only a few, I wouldn't mind. But that is not the case. There's a great chance that, like I said, out of every one good person that we get, we'll get 5 trolls/flamers/noobs/ripperz/etc.

If the first people they meet on BYOND is a troll, then they'll definitialy become a troll themselves, same happened to me, but luckily I changed. But if the first one they meet is a game-developer for example then there's a smaller chance that they'll become a troll. So new BYONDers should avoid Zeta-rips (That's where most trolls hang out), if they do that they surely won't become a troll. It's only to bad that the zeta source won't be deleted from the hub.. :| O-matic | |
My phylosophy: if it won't cost too much blood to make it and it will make memberships more wanted without taking away stuff from other people, add it.
The biggest thing BYOND needs is, well, more people. BYOND seems to only be popular with anime lovers. When are you guys going to do all of those sorts of advertising and such?
Also, you guys don't seem to work on it very much... Get busy! Then again, I have no clue... Because we are often il-informed :O A way to keep people is to show you're listening, and give feedback and add in suggestions and such :)
