LAN is a common networking term meaning Local Area Network. The Internet is a Wide Area Network. When people talk about playing games over a LAN, they typically mean a game is hosted on one system on a local network and played by others on that same network. However modern bandwidth issues make the distinction between LAN and WAN play moot for most games with a limited number of players.
