Well, I have a few dimes clinking around in my wallet, so I thought I'd hold a contest and get them back into circulation. Halloweeen is only a couple of months away, and I figured that would be plenty of time for someone to complete a nice Halloween-themed project. Also, with the interest recently piqued about classic arcade games, I decided to combine the two into a single contest.
So, here's the scoop:
You have 2 months to design, develop and polish a classic arcade game (pac-man, asteroids, etc) in a spooky halloween theme. All enteries must be submitted before November 1st, 2004. Judging of the enteries will be up to a (as of yet, unnamed) panel of judges and and three prizes will be awarded:
1st place: 100 dimes
2nd place: 50 dimes
3rd place: 25 dimes
If other people would like to donate prizes (game subscriptions, dimes, etc) let me know soon.
Here are some general rules for submission:
- Only one submission per person/team.
- People submitting as part of a team may also submit thier own game individually.
- Submissions must be polished games with few bugs or design errors.
- Only classic arcade games will be accepted.
- Game must have a holloween theme.
- Game must come with detailed instructions for play (And if you can emulate how the original accomplished this, even better)
- Sinlge or mutiplayer games are acceptable.
- All submissions must be in no later than October 31st, 2004.
- Please, only fresh projects that were begun on or after August 28th, 2004.
Games will be judged on 3 main points, listed by order of importance:
- Gameplay Emulation: How closely you recreated the gameplay of the classic. (consideration given for BYOND's limitations)
- Creative Use of Theme: The holloween theme used and how well it fits in with the classic game.
- Overall Quality: How well the game is developed overall. High-Quality graphics are not as important, but won't hurt.
If you'd like to be considered for judging the final entries, please respond here or email me. Note: Judges are not eligible for the contest.
Submissions should be sent to [email protected] by no later than October 31st, 2004. The winners will be named once judging is complete, and prizes awarded accordingly.

When I get tired of making my current project, I might just enter in this :) Hell, I might even start making something today :P
Also, you might want to add into the judging area, as a not-so-intensive judging bases, to explain the game in the instructions very well. I say this, because after hosting my own contest, someone didn't get as high of a score as they deserved because they didn't explain the game well enough, and one of the judges thought the game was just chuck-full of bugs probably based on what they remembered from playing the game in the past. An arcade game contest might not need it as much, but I still think it would be important. [edit] I think I will soon make a frogger-clone. Them tricker-treatures can have viscious feet :P Either that or a Gradius clone... Though I'm not so sure I'd want to spend too much time on this contest when I have to work on my other game so much before I get a job. |

Yeah, that brings up a good point. I guess I can revise the rules a bit:
- Game must come with detailed instructions for play (And if you can emulate how the original accomplished this, even better) ~X |
Good idea. I'll be happy to judge if I don't come up with an entry myself. I'd probably be a good judge, as I'm actually old enough to remember q-bert :P
A few sites for research purposes... http://www.klov.com/ - Gameplay descriptions, pictures, and trivia about literally thousands of video games. Includes modern and classic games. (Back to about 1971) Here are a few free game downloads, including q-bert. ;) A few more. Lots of games here, both classic and original. Some of the classic ones are fairly faithful to the originals, though many are just similar. Going through all those sites, I think I've talked myself into trying an entry, so maybe I won't be judging :P Flick P.S. I don't think dimes can be transferred anymore, so you might want to switch to paypal prizes. |

Sounds interesting. Maybe I'll give it a try! Now I just have to figure out which game to base it off of :\ PACMAN! Change Pacman into a trick-or-treater and change the pellets into candy and you're practically done! :) |

I see many things you you could do with that, if anyone is making a pac-man game for this, get in contact with me and I will share some of my ideas.

Hmm. I might just tackle a BYOND version of Q-Bert (I just played a DOS remake of it, good game). What's the view on taking graphics from the original game? =) (I'll probably do most of them from scratch, though based on the look of the game, but I just thought I'd be sure.)
Q-Bert will present an interesting challenge with regards to how its tiles are laid out... fun fun. =) |

Considering the nature of the contest, I don't think ripping graphics from the original is such a bad thing. Of course, it would be best if you designed the graphics yourself, considering the change in theme of the game. But, if you can create a nice Halloween theme using the games original graphics, I don't see any reason why you can't use them.
Obviously, I'd like to see original work, but this is a contest about remakes, so originality is already on it's way out the door. ~X |

Hokay. I might "borrow" Q-Bert and copy the tile layout, but apart from that most of the graphics will be redrawn.

Everyone needs to do this contest. It took me a single day to make my halloween frogger clone. Way simple.
Also, Xoox, please put up a bwicki page for it like I suggested! |

10 days to go before this contest closes for judging. If you haven't finished your entries, now is definetly the time! I would like to make one small adjustment to the original post, please send contest entries to [email protected] instead of my hotmail account. I doubt my old account could hold numerous attachments.
I could still use judges for this. Exadv1 has expressed interest, as well as Flick. Someone I think is NexusOrb contacted my about judging, but they never provided their key, so I'm not certain. If you want to judge, and are not entering, reply here or email me [email protected]. I would like confirmation from Exadv1 and Flick to see if they still want to be judges, and perhaps this Joey C. fellow as well. Payments will be via PayPal, unless the winners expressly want thier winnings transfered in another form. I think I can do straight dimes, but alternate methods would be preferable. Thanks for playing and I hope to see those entries rolling in! Good luck! ~X |

I'll judge. I won't have anything worth submitting in 10 days. I should've worked on this sooner... -.-

You can get me at the e-mail address in my BYOND profile/lookup/whatever you call it. That should still be working.

If I can fit in finishing my entry between school assignments, I'll enter it for sure...
Oh, and you made a typo in your email address in the first paragraph. Kinda important to get that right, no? =) |
