So, I'm going to use E.T. as a startoff.

Well I figured if we were going to have a female programmer topic, we might as well have a realistic one, as opposed to a sexualised fantasy one. :P

Nothing. 4th base is when you two hold hands while playing LAN.

What are you all talking about? Female programmers? They're full of run-time errors. Besides, according to the compiler females are always right.

then again you guys dont get nearly as much women as i do so that would explain why you wouldn't have known the correct number of bases.

I can get a little touchy on this subject, as the terribly low numbers of women in software development is a pretty big issue for my beloved industry.

It kind of has the female gamer problem, where sex is weirdly held against them or factored in way above their ... you know, actual abilities. Kinda like this topic. :P It's weird, I dunno why (aside from the prevailing stereotype that male programmers don't get social interaction) this always happens.

I'll ask around actually, see if I can get some lady programmers to join in on the topic, maybe that'll help some.

at the hospital i worked at, our software engineers or whatever had 5 girls working there, and like 7 guys. that was just one of the floors, maybe the chicks were rarer on other floors but i talked with 3 of them and they seemed pretty chillax, and came off as more social than the "people with lives".

there was one cute one but she didn't do programming, she was like, a liason or whatever. basically it was her job to ask the people they were writing software for what they wanted, and then she'd relay that info to the programmer dudes ( and dudettes ) and thats how they knew what and how they needed to do stuff

When I think about the kinds of things I say (as a woman in computer science) to my boyfriend (in networking, not software), I think of things like...
  • Jokes about bad video games
  • Pictures of cute animals
  • My complaining about poor documentation/inefficient loops
  • His complaining about poor network setup/maintenance
But, honestly, today, we were talking about women in computer science fields! (Last week was "programmer pick-up lines." You guys missed out. We agree that the best one is that Unix command sequence? A little PG13, so you can look that up yourself.)

And here, a little something if you want the "my gf is a programmer" experience:

I'm sure most of you can relate to my complaints. That's what it's like to be a programmer, right?

Being a female programmer is a little different, but not on the "writing code" end. Here's my and my boyfriend's discussion on the topic. Maybe it will shed a little light on the realities of being a woman who programs for you guys! c:
BLU: I love the post about google's initiative to encourage girls to join the tech industry
BLU: but there was one thing about the comment added on that hit a sour note with me
BLU: "Tech jobs are in such high demand and honestly, being a female is an advantage because there aren’t many in the field." I'm not sure whether or not I can agree with that

BLU: on the one hand, you might be considered an asset because you bring a different perspective to a company and because you make their recruitment numbers look better? but on the other hand, people will shit-test you over trivial things and you have to work harder to prove that you "fit" or "belong"

I know this is well meaning, but I am gonna just put a little correction in there. :P

Female programmers are male programmers inside female bodies.

As that's kinda the point, programming isn't a gendered skill. The reasons around why we have so few female programmers (and indeed, /even fewer/ lead female programmers) don't really pertain to programming, but other things. Such as the 'you have to work harder to prove that you "fit" or "belong"' issue that Blu raises.
